Best Country Drinking Songs:
No. 4

'You Never Even Called Me By My Name'

--David Allan Coe (1978)

Cheers-worthy lines: "I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison / And I went to pick her up in the rain / But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck / She got run over by a damned old train."

This song isn't primarily about drinking. It's just a helluva lot of fun to sing when you're drunk. ("And I'll hang around as long as you will let me / Let me! Let me! Let me! Let me!")

THIS song should be on ALL of the lists. I love to HEAR it when I'm sober...but I sing it better than ANYONE...IN THE WORLD...when I'm...NOT...:-)

Read the lyrics, or better yet, listen to Coe's "If That Ain't Country." He uses the "N" word in the song, and I don't approve, but it fits with the rest of the song and is used as a descriptive phrase rather than a comment.

The song was written by the great Steve Goodman, and Steve's version is much, much better.
