When we sat down with Josh Gracin to talk about his new album, 'We Weren't Crazy,' the conversation drifted to the war in Iraq. Gracin, a former Marine, had some pretty strong opinions, especially on how the war is presented in the media. Below is the country star's personal stance on the work of our troops overseas, in his own words.I was just in Knoxville and did something with a radio station there, WIVK. There's a DJ there named Gunner, and he does this thing with the 49th [Military Police Brigade] from Knoxville. They're stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq right now, and what they are is basically builders . . . And he gets them on satellite phone on the radio and talks to them for like 30 minutes, so their families can hear them talk. So I was talking to them, and hearing about the amazing things that are going on over there. We're talking about schools in places that never had schools; hospitals in places that have never had them; water purification systems. Afganistan and Iraq are being built up by us.
What irks me is that you don't hear about that, you don't see that. And they have internet, they have CNN. They can see what's being talked about, and they're off the front page now unless a soldier dies. You never hear about any good things. It's all political. And my whole take on it is that if people really knew what was going on, then they'd believe the same things I believe.
Now do I wanna stay there a long time? Absolutely not. It's not good for families. It's not good for the men and women over there. But when you take an oath, when you volunteer, that's your duty. That's your job. And they know that. And what I think needs to happen is there needs to be an influx. They need to send as many as we need to get the job done, to get it over with and to have a presence there like we do in Korea. We've had people in Korea . . . three thousand, maybe even six thousand soldiers in Korea since the 50s and 60s. They've stayed there. We have soldiers based in countries all over the world. So how is it different now? It's different because people are making it an issue.
Hollywood stars are so into charity and helping kids and AIDS and Darfur and everything like that. Well great things are being done in Iraq, too. They're building schools and hospitals. You name it, they're doing it. They're giving these kids and these families things they've never been given before. So it's funny to me how, when it's popular, it's accepted. But when people think it's unpopular, it's wrong. That just gets to me. So I think we should be there until the job is done. And if we pull out, it's gonna be worse.

I think my favorite American Idol moment was when Josh Gracin sang the BeeGees "To Love Somebody",...he was voted off that week, but on the elimination episode he went into the audience, picked up his baby girl, and sang "To Love Somebody" to her as the credits rolled. It was beautiful. By the way, for anyone interested there are some good articles on American Idol at jviz.blogspot.com and here http://jviz.blogspot.com/2008/04/young-stars.html

This guy is a jerk, we have hospitals closing HERE for lack of funding, MILLIONS of AMERICANS with no healthcare, pensions looted by corrupt CEO's like those at Enron, on and on. Although I grew up with REAL country music in the hills and hollars, I have NEVER bought into the knee-jerk Right Wing rubbish that seems to afflict so many so-called "country" stars today. We need to take care of our own folks, it's NOT Bin Laden shipping jobs overseas in the name of profits, it's NOT Bin Laden turfing folks out of their homes, or polluting places like the Ozarks with strip mining, and it's sure as heck NOT Bin Laden lining his pockets with $4.00 a gallon gas either. Nope, the REAL TERROR comes from the soul-withered ghouls who run this country today, they wear three piece suits, and sit in corporate board rooms, not in Iraq, but here in America.

this guy is NOT a jerk i dont care what you think! hes been a first class soldier and knows exactly what is going on. hes been there done that and you have no idea what you are talking about. if we dont finish the job we started as Americans then what is that saying to the whole world? we're just fooling around wasting our time money and other soldiers lives. it would be a total waste to pull out now. im sick of people wanting to run their mouths when they wouldn't fight for our country if they were drafted.

Nathan-Who are you calling a jerk? What gets me is people that believe everything the stupid media tells them & uses that info to refute FIRST HAND REPORTS!!!
I happen to know of another young man that served over there. He is EXTREMELY proud of what has & will happen.
Have you been over there? Do you know what is happening? Have you read top-secret intel that gives valid reasons why we shouldn't be there? If not, SHUT UP! PLEASE!
Josh Gracin is SOO country & I'm proud of him for having the guts to say this.
YOU GO FOR IT PAL!!!

I agree with John 100%. I am a Korea war & Vietnam veteran & Know that the media only prints the bad stuff, never the good things that are being done. If we pull out now, those fanatics will believe that they can do anything to us & get away with it.
Do you recall Alan Jackson's song " Remember When"
GOOD FOR HIM!!!at 4-25-2008
Good for him!!! I agree with John 100% too and also - to the person complaining that we have it so rough over here. Please. We are "richer" in more ways than most countries. The problem is we are SPOILED and we think things like not being able to watch a TV show if the cable box goes out is a big deal. We have this sense of entitlemenrt. I am glad we can help other countries and I am proud of our servicemen!

Thank you Josh for being brave enough to come out and state the truth! I have always liked you and I am very proud of you that you aren't afraid to say you support the efforts there. As a mother of soldiers I hear the same thing you said from them! And to Nathan, all I can say is why aren't you slamming all the hollywood stars including oprah who are spending millions of dollars in other countries besides the country that gave them their millions?
carrolat 4-25-2008
Like many I have strong opinions. I totally agree with Josh. Being over there is notthe issue he's talking about. Right or wrong - support our troops. Let the country know the work they are doing over there matters. Our troops are Great Americans and we should be proud of them. Don't let them down - tell the world about the good they are doing.

“We have soldiers based in countries all over the world. So how is it different now?"
Actually it's different because we attacked a country without provocation and introduced a bloody civil war in order to establish acquire their oil reserves. While no one can question our nation's responsibilities in having to rebuild a country we've decimated, our reasons for being there were fabricated and it's not unreasonable for those of us who knew from the beginning that this war was founded on lies can take little solace in the efforts being made to clean up this horrendous mess.
Yet with that said, no one could ever fault the soldiers on the ground nor overlook the incredible service they've made on behalf of our great nation. Rather, as the death toll mounts (both American and Iraqi), you cannot help but regret the decisions of those that lied the United States of America into this horrific predicament.

Rich-The reasons that we are over there are not fabricated. Terrorism is very real. The torture that the Iraqi gov't put their people through is the real deal.
Wanna talk about death toll? Count the number of our own citizens that are killed every day by abortion.
As I said earlier-I know a man that was over there. He will tell you that the horrible condition of the country was not fabricated. He will tell you of people that are grateful we are there.
We have not decimated the country-it was worse before we got there than it is now.

Beth are you kidding me? My husband was over there for two tours for a total of 2 years and I believe what HE says over anyone else. The first tour, he really thought they were doing something special. This last tour (he just got home in October 2007) was nothing but death for the citizens of Iraq and for the unit he was with. They may have wanted us there to begin with but most do NOT want us there now.
They have even SAID that the violence will not STOP until we leave. We never should have gone into Iraq to begin with. The reason we went in was NOT to help Iraq and if you believe that, I feel VERY sorry for you.
We had our own agenda when we went in but going in to "help" was the cover up. There were weapons found but of the type the Bush administration said they had and certainly not the amounts we were told they had.
President Bush is the worst President in the history of this country and invading Iraq was nothing but vengeance.
There were no connections and there are no connections between Iraq and 9/11. Sure Saddam is gone but he didn't attack our country. Read the Constitution.. the President can't declare war. That is Congress' job.
