Big & Rich's John Rich has a bone to pick with 'American Idol.' During a press event in Pasadena, Calif., Rich ranted about a recent flub by 'Idol' judge Paula Abdul."'American Idol' infuriates me as an artist," he told reporters. "They're being fake about it. When you can't make a cognizant comment about someone's performance and you're commenting on something that happened the day before, why don't you just walk up on stage and slap them right across the face while you're at it? As an artist, I would just flip them the bird and walk off the stage. She wasn't even paying attention to what was going on."
Abdul's blunder happened two weeks ago on a live show, when she critiqued a contestant's performance that she'd only seen in rehearsal but that did not air on television. That's just part of the reason why Rich thinks that 'Idol' is a "scripted" reality show whose ratings are "going into the toilet right now." Rich went on to tell reporters that his own reality talent show, 'Nashville Star,' is all real.
"We have to respect the fans' ears and eyes and give them something that's for real. Don't try to con them," he said. "And I think that's why 'American Idol,' in my opinion, is just dive-bombing. I can't stand watching it. I wouldn't want to be on that show now if you gave me a 100 dollar bill."
Executives at the FOX television network are fighting back. They quickly released a statement in response to Rich's criticisms: "John Rich's ungentlemanly and opportunistic comments are particularly disturbing considering the fact he attended a taping of 'American Idol' last April, told producers, judges and performers he enjoyed himself and also did an interview with a crew from 'American Idol Extra' where he was extremely complimentary toward the show."

I am a country music fan through and through. John Rich is a great songwriter, but as an artist, he's hit and miss. As a TV personality, he's a disgrace.
He recently had a reality show on CMT where the contestants were Marsha Brady, Bobby Brown, Carnie Wilson, Sisqo, Dee Snider, etc. He chose Julio Iglesias, Jr. as the one to "go country." It was as pathetic a thing as I'd ever seen. Unbelieveably bad.
If he's writing a song, you should respect him, anything else is questionable at best.

And if any of us cared about John Rich or his music, we would maybe give a rats butt what he said. Paula made a mistake - get over it. Guess you are perfect?

I think John Rich is too big for his jeans.... I use to really like him until his reality show when he showed up in all those fur coats looking like a pimp... Give us a break..... Paula is what Paula is... of what I dont know but hey it is not rocket science... Easier up John..

John's merely expressing what millions of other people are saying this season. The ratings have shown it. The whole show needs to be revamped. Fox should insist Paula go to rehab or make some excuse or lie and dismiss her.

If any of us cared about John Rich or his supposed music, I guess we'd worry about this views. Paula made a mistake- get over it. You must be perfect?

Nashville Star might be real, but as far as talent goes, does anybody remember any of the winners from that show? Everyone knows the winners, and runners-up, from Idol. I watched the first year and liked Buddy Jewel, but that was it. And now that I hear Cyrus is the MC this year, I for sure won't watch it. What a egotist.

It must be nice to be someone who has never ever made a mistake. I wonder how that feels. As for Idol's ratings being in the toilet...how he can even say that with a straight face is beyond me. Even if they're down a bit, they're still far far far from being in the toilet. I actually like Nashville Star quite a bit too and you'd think this guy, given his association with that show would have more respect for someone else's show. Not very hospitable in my view. And I think he is being very disrespectful to the performers, fans and producers of Idol. I will still watch Nashville Star when it comes back on but I am kind of disappointed with this rant on his part.

What about that ungodly, ugly house he is building in Nashville?
Why would anyone care what he thinks about anything?

Hey, if John Rich says it, then that's gospel.

Get a grip John. No one is perfect. Paula has had a great career and has been very giving and compasionate both within the music industry and outside. Your arrogant attitude is exactly why I quit going to your shows.

I always watched American Idol untill this season, When I heard they were picking some of the contestants from former singers I was not interested. I think it should be for everyday people that want a chance at making it.
If someone has been under contract earlier they should not be part of this show. Just my thoughts.
