John Rich Disses 'American Idol'

Big & Rich's John Rich has a bone to pick with 'American Idol.' During a press event in Pasadena, Calif., Rich ranted about a recent flub by 'Idol' judge Paula Abdul.

"'American Idol' infuriates me as an artist," he told reporters. "They're being fake about it. When you can't make a cognizant comment about someone's performance and you're commenting on something that happened the day before, why don't you just walk up on stage and slap them right across the face while you're at it? As an artist, I would just flip them the bird and walk off the stage. She wasn't even paying attention to what was going on."

Abdul's blunder happened two weeks ago on a live show, when she critiqued a contestant's performance that she'd only seen in rehearsal but that did not air on television. That's just part of the reason why Rich thinks that 'Idol' is a "scripted" reality show whose ratings are "going into the toilet right now." Rich went on to tell reporters that his own reality talent show, 'Nashville Star,' is all real.

"We have to respect the fans' ears and eyes and give them something that's for real. Don't try to con them," he said. "And I think that's why 'American Idol,' in my opinion, is just dive-bombing. I can't stand watching it. I wouldn't want to be on that show now if you gave me a 100 dollar bill."

Executives at the FOX television network are fighting back. They quickly released a statement in response to Rich's criticisms: "John Rich's ungentlemanly and opportunistic comments are particularly disturbing considering the fact he attended a taping of 'American Idol' last April, told producers, judges and performers he enjoyed himself and also did an interview with a crew from 'American Idol Extra' where he was extremely complimentary toward the show."

Look people John is just talking to get attention. He has been on as many TV shows as possible because his ego needs to be fead. I know John from his days in Lonestar and as a solo act. His head blew up after the first Big & Rich CD sold millions. He and Big Kenny only tolerate each other anymore because there is too much money to be made. They don't even talk to each other at shows. John has changed in so many ways that it's really sad. The people that hang out with him are users and are only riding on his coat tails. John needs to take a long look in the mirror. They say success changes people and I've seen it over and over again. I have never seen anyone change like John Rich did. If anyone here knows Big & Rich you know what I'm saying is true.

The old "Star Search" was better, without all the hoopla and big money through commercials, and the contrived feeling throughout the show.

Less Is More.

Alright, reading through about two and a half pages on comments on this particular subject I pretty much have gained a reasonable opinion about everything.

Reading the first page I kept thinking "John who?". Reading the season page and half of the third page my opinion stuck with me. Skimming through channels I may have seen Nashville Star but I never gained enough interest for it to actually stop my channel surfing to watch it. I don't know who John is getting at, I've never heard of him but then again my knowledge of country music consists of Rascal Flatts and the duet between Nelly and whats-his-face. (Horrible collaboration, tbh). Although that's all I know, this John character seems to be stuck in the mud (which is composed of his own inflated ego). Good first impression for someone who has never heard of you John, keep up the good work.

As for American Idol, their ratings going down or not, I'm willing to bet my house that Idol has more ratings than Nashville. I've never opened up my magazine collection and have read anything about Nashville Star but actually about American Idol and people that have been kicked off.
American Idol, it having people on it who have tried to be signed to record companies and/or be successful in that type of career, good for them to get their name out there this much. American Idol is about average people coming off the street and trying out. They judge pretty fairly, in my opinion. If the people who happen to get far happen to have been signed before, then alright. Idol is about chances and about having that opportunity.

If I were to be a judge for American Idol and had to pick between two singers (not knowing which had a recording contract), I'm going to pick the best between the two, if the person that was the best happen to have a recording contract previously, so be it. But fairly, they're better and they want it. They deserve it.

I really care about John, but the fact is, he's right. Who has ever won American Idol that you could REALLY consider to be an AMERICAN Idol? There are a couple that have stuck around, but in reality, their music is just based on other styles that have already been around and they are simply mimicking them with new lyrics. I have respect for the people who go on the show, but I really question how beneficial the show is to the artists. Yeah it gets them out there, but if you look at who wins breakout artist of the year in the music awards arena...I don't see any of the winners on the show making the cut.

All about ratings. He's not disgraced by Paula, he's disgraced by Idol's ratings - even when they're in the toilet.

First of all, nobody even knows who John Rich is. Second of all, this is probably something that he did to be able to get free publicity of his show by thinking that by his comments people will turn against American Idol and start watching his lame so called "reality" tv show. And i can prove this because why all of a sudden when the ratings on his tv show started going down, did he start to criticize the show and the judges, that are just doing what they are supposed to do which is to criticize the contestants with good or bad comments and to show them how they can get better. And then he mentions his "reality tv show which has nothing to do with this and starts mentioning these random things that it is real and their goal is to hear fans ears[?] That is all BS. Also, he is just JEALOUS. Thats right, hes JEALOUS. Hes jealous that American Idol is the most watched tv show in America and nobody even knows the name of his tv show.

I dont think that John should completely hate the show, but I do think that it was ridiculous for Paula to not be paying attention and that she based her opinion on her notes that she had in front of her instead of what she heard.

I usually don't comment when it comes to this kind of nonsense and that is exactly what it is..Paula made an honest to God mistake. The show that particular evening was confusing at best as they changed the format. Paula and the judges in general are in no way fake. AND in this writer's opinion I doubt very much that the judges comments are scripted. That is an unfair assumption. Those kids are good, especially the 2 Davids and in no way are they getting a "faker" response..But in repetition Paula made a mistake on live tv. PERIOD!

Paula messed up, big deal, everyone knows that she is not always with it. Just so you know some contestants from the past have had previous contracts, it is not just some of this years contestants that have had previous contracts.
