Story Behind the Song: 'Don't You Know You're Beautiful,' Kellie Pickler

Kellie Pickler tells the heartfelt story behind her latest single, as written on her MySpace page.

I believe in this song because it beholds a very powerful message. I think we all suffer from low self esteem from time to time and we all have our own insecurities . . . which can really bring a person down. In today's society we (including myself) often compare ourself to that person or model on the front of the magazine, and we all want those expensive clothes that are displayed . . . I think that is just human nature. I will be the first to tell you "ALL OF THAT IS NOT REAL." You would NOT believe the touching up photographers can do to pictures. By the time they are done airbrushing those pictures and touching them up, the photo barely looks like the person. Photographers can make you thinner/heavier, give you whatever eye color you want, enhance and change anything in the photo. We live in a very superficial world. ALL of that stuff does NOT matter! It is NOT important!

HERE'S WHAT IS IMPORTANT: Beauty comes in ALL different shapes and sizes and in EVERY color there is. So, when you look in the mirror tell yourself that you are beautiful and BELIEVE it. LOVE YOURSELF, BE YOURSELF, and NEVER change who you are for ANYONE! Be thankful for every breath you take because somewhere in the world someone else is taking their last. NEVER get caught up in the "worldly things" or the "superficial things," because all of that can and will eventually be taken away. BUT, the "beauty" on the inside will always remain! People will remember the kindness of someone's heart forever . . . Never forget to hold your head up high because "DON'T YOU KNOW YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL!"

I agree with Octavio. Nick, some people are unhappy because someone has "beaten them down". If all you hear are negative things about you, then eventually you tend to believe it to be true, whether it really is or not. It lowers your self-esteem. Not everyone can have the confidence in themselves to overcome such situations. Mike and Denise, Octavio made a good point. If you have followed Kelly and listened to videos of interviews or read other articles about her, then you know that she has not come from the most pleasant home life. That is very unfortunate and a lot of people go through that unpleasantness. Despite the obstacles Kelly has had already in her young life, she has turned out to be not only pretty but beautiful as well. Pretty is only skin deep. Real beauty comes from within, the person that you, the heart that you have. That is Kelly's point in this song. God bless you Kelly for turning your life into what it is today! You are not only pretty but you are a BEAUTIFUL lady!

Mike and Denise:

By your logic, anyone who has ever smoked a joint can't tell his kids to stay away from drugs.

Most of the intended audience is sophisticated enough to understand that Kellie is an entertainer who isn't suddenly going to stop shaving her armpits and start showing up for shows dressed in sack cloth and thrift-store quality Birkenstocks.

But despite making lots of money and looking damn good, Kellie is telling them that expensive clothes and merely looking good isn't the most satisfying part of her life, and it shouldn't be in theirs.

Even if they can't afford to keep up with her, or their wealthier friends, they should still believe in themselves and not give up.

Pretty simple message, really.

haha good one. This song does highlight a lot of good stuff, but let me take a stab at why people are unhappy.
Might it possibly be that most of these people are complete sheep? If you have to follow what someone else does in order to feel good then you already have some serious issues. peace lemmings.
