Country's Greatest Patriotic Songs: No. 1

'God Bless the USA,'
Lee Greenwood (1983)

Proudest Lines: "I gladly stand up, next to you and defend her still today/'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land/God bless the USA"

Though Greenwood wrote this song in 1983, it didn't become a big hit until Desert Storm in 1991, when radio stations embraced it to help boost patriotism. The song re-entered the country charts in 2001 after 9/11.

There are, if you count only artists from the 20th century, thousands of truly patriotic songs, most, that you could likely compress down to a few hundred, that can cause a crowd to part, when played, let alone songs that show true believers and patriots, by the near uncontrollable reaction to when the song is played. Truth being told, they didn't list all the possible greatest patriotic songs, but in my opinion, they listed 10, that truly are of recent memory, and that, for any genuine Patriot(not meaning football team fan), would cause to choke up, or beam, with nerves and hairs at attention. No fewer than 6 of this list of 10 commonly choke me up, and make me burst with pride. Regardless if they didn't list all songs that deserve mentioning, they did a swell listing. The one they picked for #1, is one of the currently best known examples of patriotic songs(not just country), and one that makes greats like General "Stormin' Norman" shiver with pride. I see no foul in their selection, so just enjoy the songs and the reasons for the songs!

This is an ageless & timeless beautiful masterpiece of a song. It moves me to tears & warms my heart no matter how many times I've heard it over the years.

Nice list, however, what about "Every Day Hero" by Maryland Country singer/writer David Wayne? It is a great song that cane be accessed and played by googleing it in on your computer. Listen and see why it should be on the the Top 10 list.

I wonder what the soldiers, veterans and their Immediate family members top 10 are?
I think they would be the ones to ask.
AOL ought to do a poll,
That would be more accurate

Frank Sinatra's "The House I live In" is my favorite patriotic song and it has nothing to do with the military, the flag, wars, fighting, nadaaaa. Listen to it and you will realize that this song is what America was and could be once again.

I don't know much about most of these, some of them are from the new Pop Star celebrity bunch and I've got no use for them. Waylon was good. One of my favorites that I think we should all take another listen to is Haggards "Are the Good Times really Over"

I was stationed overseas in 1983 when this song came out, your assertion that it "didn't become popular" until 1991 is false, we played this song until the grooves came off the record, and sang along to it every single night in the NCO club. It may not have been popular with the general American populace, but it was an immediate hit with veterans & active duty alike.

I was in Texas in the Air Force in 1987 and whenever we would go to the NCO Club this song would play a couple times a night, there was never a person sitting down when the line "I'd gladly stand up, next to you..." would play, not that we could hear it play, we all yelled the line out.
I know it wasn't very popular, but I love Luke Stricklin's, American by God's Amazing Grace, it was written while he was serving in Iraq.

I agree that Greenwoods song is the best. as a veteran (USAF) I had the priviledge of meeting Lee at a Concert while I was stationed in England. As for comments of Toby Keith and the others, just because they didn't serve in our military doesn't make them un-american. Look at all the stars/singers/etc that have entertained our troops over the years, i bet the soldiers would never say such ugly things about anyone that has written or sang a patriotic song. To all the "haters" out there, before u say anything else nasty, maybe u should fly over to our soldiers and tell them u hate those singers, u'd get your ass whooped, I don't see any of u going to Iraq to support the troops, or even going to a veterans hospital and just say thanks... that's what songs are about, to let our soldiers know that we support them and what they do.....
