LeAnn Rimes is featured in a new PSA to raise awareness for psoriasis. The singer is disclosing for the first time publicly that she has suffered from the disease since she was 2 years old. Rimes says that as a young girl, she was covered in painful red patches on her skin."Not only does that take a physical toll on your body, but it takes an emotional toll," Rimes tells PEOPLE magazine. "I was very self-conscious."
Rimes has now been symptom-free for five years, thanks to diet and medication. She is sharing her struggle with psoriasis on behalf of the 'Stop Hiding' campaign, hoping to help the almost seven million Americans who suffer from the disease. You can watch her PSA here.

Good for her! It's great when we can see celebrities bring illnesses and conditions to light when it's to help others also suffering from them and not just for the publicity.

I would like to know what medication is helping her. I have had psoriasis for 4 years now, (adult onset) and have found nothing that takes it away.

Hi Brenda. My brother in law suffers from psoriasis on his skin and in his joints. He has it severely. He has to go once a month to have a drug called Remicade. It is and IV drug that is actually is for cancer, but they've discovered that it works for autoimmune diseases as well. When he first started it, he was sick as a dog from the drug itself, but after a few treatments, the side effects have pretty much disappeared. The
psoriasis seems to be completely gone, but he still has to go for Remicade once a month. It is very expensive, though,so check with your insurance provider first. It is a last resort when all else fails.

Hi Brenda...In regards to the last comment about the Remicade, I've been on it as well for Crohns Disease. It worked immediately for me and I had no negative side effects..Not right away at least. I went every 8 weeks, and it took about 5-6 hours each time. but you sleep it away!! The bad thing was that your body CAN become immune to it, during my 5th treatment I ended up having a reaction to it, and started to go into Anaphylactic Shock. Needless to say, I stopped the medicine, however It DID help, and it MAY NOT affect you the same way. Good Luck!

I have had the disease for 45 years. Over the counter, there is not much that you can do. Medically, you may be a able to use a number of oral or injectable (humera, Raptiva, neoral)treatments. You will need to see a derm doctor. If you do not have insurance, this is very costly out of pocket. Insurance does pay in most cases. The downfall is once you start using the drugs, you cannot stop. The psoriasis will come back worse. The dermatologist rarely tell you the truth about that part of the treatment. I have used Raptiva, Enbrol and oral as well. My lesions are gone. Joe G NY

Brenda, as someone who also suffers from a autoimmune disease let me say I feel you pain. I have Multiple Sclerosis.....there is no cure for auto immune disease. Their are meds to slow progression for me but, no cure. I have spent alot of money on products that friends have sold me. They were all well meaning and I love them for it but, it was a waste of money. In the hospital we use Crisco cooking oil in tub on severe cases. It really eases the flaking and soothes the skin. I know who would have thought it ...right. I just wanted you to beware of "cures" and "instant fixes" your friend and Cardiac Critical Care nurse for 14 yrs.

Hi Brenda,
I know how you feel. My father and daughter suffer too. Somehow it skipped me. Anyways - I sell BeautiControl skin care and we have an anti-itch cream. I got my dad some to try for the itching. About 3 months later, he came over to show me how good the cream was working... and it was completly gone. I was so shocked!!! I vowed that I would share his testimony with anyone I could help. If you are interested in trying it let me know, if not I hope that you find something that works for you. Take care & God Bless!

Brenda,
I have had it for 7 years now also adult onset. It really sucks, but I have some meds that are working. They are drugs they used to use for cancer, they are old chemo meds called methtrexate. Feel free to email me.

I applaud her for speaking out about the disease of psoriasis, my dear hubby suffered terribly for 30 years, nothing from the specialists, Drs. etc...ever helped him....UNTIL.two years ago, a dear friend, told of a natural anti inflammatory that has been a huge blessing. We are stunned and blessed, now two years later, that John has 90% healing from his 30 year struggle with severe psoriasis. There is hope my friends!!!
