A grand jury has indicted veteran country songwriter Billy Joe Shaver on felony charges, following a shooting at a bar in Lorena, Texas last year. Shaver shot fellow patron Billy B. Coker in the cheek, as the two argued outside Papa Joe's Texas Saloon. Coker was treated and released from a local hospital. The 69-year-old Shaver is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful carrying of a handgun. According to the arrest warrant affidavit, one witness told authorities that the country star followed the victim out of the bar and asked, "Where do you want it?" before shooting him. Another witness claimed she heard Shaver say to Coker, "Nobody tells me to shut up!"
Shaver's attorney insists the country star acted in self-defense. He claims Coker was intoxicated when he followed Shaver into the bar and threatened him with a knife.
Shaver rose to fame in the early '70s, writing hits for Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson. His own hits include 'Georgia on a Fast Train' and 'I'm Just an Old Chunk of Coal (But I'm Gonna Be a Diamond Someday).'
