Natalie Maines Sued for Defamation

Dixie Chicks' lead singer Natalie Maines is being sued for defamation over statements she allegedly made about Terry Hobbs, the stepfather of one of three eight-year-old boys murdered in West Memphis, Ark., in 1993 -- an incident made famous by the 1996 acclaimed documentary 'Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills.'

Hobbs filed the complaint on November 25 in Pulaski County Circuit Court alleging that Maines made a "false and reckless claim that [Hobbs] committed the murders of the three boys ..."

Steve Branch (Hobbs' stepson), Christopher Byers and Michael Moore were found dead May 5, 1993 in West Memphis, Ark. Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley and Jason Baldwin, all of West Memphis, were convicted of the murders in 1994.

Maines -- identified by her married name, Pasdar, in the lawsuit -- made the comments at issue during a rally last December on the steps of the Arkansas State Capitol in Little Rock. (Watch video of those comments here.)

The lawsuit also claims that Pasdar "recklessly published or caused to be published malicious, libelous, slanderous, and false statements" on the band's website in November 2007 and that those statements were republished by several media outlets, including FOX News, The Memphis Commercial Appeal, and PEOPLE magazine.

The lawsuit seeks undisclosed punitive damages and "all other just and proper relief to which he may be entitled."

The case has attracted national attention, with many claiming insufficient evidence was presented to convict Echols, Misskelley and Baldwin, known as the "West Memphis Three."

First of all I agree with all of you that posted about freedom of speech. This country was founded to escape persecution from others, what happened to our rights? Natalie Maines has EVERY right to say what she said and she is not the first person to make such comments about Hobbs, she is just the first celebrity to make headlines about it. Hobbs is just looking for a quick buck, end of story.

Second, for all of you posting that Natalie Maines and the Dixie Chicks need to shut up, I beg you to look at all the facts before you post such hateful comments. If you are saying Maines shouldn't have said what she said...maybe you shouldn't be saying what you are saying about her...perhaps she should sue all of you for defamation.

I sincerely feel bad for the Dixie Chicks because they spoke their mind and got the shaft from country music. Had they been rock/pop artists they would have sold more records and got more positive press like Kanye West and his statements targeted at Bush. Unfortunately the Chicks' sole audience are uneducated patriots who would rather wave the American flag in ignorance than look around them and see what a mess America is.

are you kidding me? i am sometimes ashamed of the ignorant people that make up the middle of this country. you are the ones that need to shut your mouth and reflect. you are the true embarassment of america. not a celebrity who is speaking out for a just cause or calling attention to the flag waving that happened post 9-11 that other country celebritys cashed in on and you were to ignorant to realize as you pulled out your wallet. Wake up and take a look around.

If Natalie wants to stand behind Freedom of Speech than maybe she should not hate the country that gave that right to her. Why is it that other countries can stand up and say what is so wonderful about their country and when Americans do it it's considered sickening and wrong.

Its a crazy world out there. All anyone wants to do is sue somebody for whatever cha-ching they can get. It'll be a cold day in hell before that guy gets any money from her!!! And if anyone had read about The West Memphis 3 and read how the Memphis police handled this, everyone would know they messed up big time..All the trials are up for retrial because of the judge, evidence, statements, recants of statements, new DNA,new lawyers the whole nine yards..There is so much support for these 3 boys. Everyone knows they didnt do this.. This is America !!! We can say whatever we want to..its called FREEDOM OF SPEECH..Speak up now cuz the way this country has been lately, they just might take that from us too !!!

What's with all of the comments calling NM un-American or anti-American? If you really feel this way about her maybe you are the anti-American. Just 'cause she spoke her mind about Bush certainly does not make her un-American, but bashing somebody because they spoke their mind is a little bit un-American, and don't fall back on the "red herring" statement that because she was on foreign soil it is wrong to speak about a president, that's just silly.

Besides, just look at how many people have come to see the truth about what Bush really is.......

You would think a group that started out known as being called the "DIXIE CUPS" would realize they may be widespread and known all over the place, but they are seen as they actually are... as actually very small. Have you ever used a Dixie Cup at the dentist office or at a doctors office? They really don't hold much.

After reading this blog, I've realized that the dividing line between those who support the three teens and those who think they were wrongfully convicted is geographic.

Those who LIVE in the area (West Memphis)and who observed the crime aftermath and the trial, are overwhelmingly certain that Echols and company are guilty and therefore rightfully imprisoned. Myself included. Echols had delusions of Satanic grandeur even as a child, according to his babysitter, someone I was very close to. He was downright scary, and perhaps mentally ill. I believe that these three are exactly where they should be.

Natalie has a history of opening her mouth and saying things she isn't qualified to speak of, and she needs to learn when to take the opportunity to keep quiet. Our constitution makes free political speech lawful, but our laws make libel legally actionable. She may soon learn the difference, and it may just be an expensive lesson.
