Cook Says Underwood is Reason Label Dropped Her

Kristy Lee Cook is speaking out against her former record label, Arista Nashville. The 'American Idol' alum says record execs spent too much time and money on another country 'Idol.'

"(Arista) released me again. It's because I was on the same label as Carrie Underwood," Cook tells the Grants Pass Daily Courier. "We're kind of glad that we got released because we weren't getting the attention we need."

Cook first signed with Arista at age 17 but was dropped before any music was released. She was re-signed to the label shortly after placing seventh on Season 7 of 'Idol,' and quickly released her debut album, 'Why Wait.'

"They promoted it a little bit," Cook says of Arista's attention to the album. "They spent so much more money on Carrie."

Cook's first single, '15 Minutes of Shame,' hit the Top 30 on the country charts, but no other singles from the album were officially released to radio. She says fans haven't heard her best music yet.

"I have a song that they didn't want me to put on the album that's going to be a hit," Cook insists. "I'm going to take it to another label ... We're talking with Universal right now."

Kristy my take some time now to evaluate how she would like to present herself to Nashville and country fans in general. Crying over spilt milk and throwing blame out there isn't exactly going to get you a golden ticket in Nashville.
You might think about what you say and about whom you say it. Unfortunetly for you, you are but a small wimpy minnow in a sea of big giant fish and you can't swim that fast!
A label shifting money to an artist who is producing Platinum Records right now...Hmmm, sounds like good business to me.

Come on lets get real, you are not as good and never will be when being compared to Carrie Underwood. You can not seriously believe that after you got kicked off of American Idol you would be taken as a better singer as Carrie, you are dreaming. You can't sing and I don't believe you should have made it at all. Good luck with name dropping as your excuse for not being able to sing. I love Carrie she is a true LADY !!!!!

You all write like good people that you are so let me explain my comments and I am sure you will feel better concerning my posts. First off, I essentially intended to remark that no one in show business is deliberately booted out the door if they are straight when they show up and they produce a lot of income for the owners. Apparently releasing the one young lady was a business decision. In my writing career almost from scratch I have suggested that a standard concert show be offered to the public, no judges and only pros and absent Madison Ave and the Hollywood tabloids. Also I have often expressed my confidence that Carrie Underwood will be the only entertainer to emrge from the Idol handcuff as a true gift to the industry.

Ms Cook seems to have a lot of excuses for reasons why her album didn't sell much. The fact is Arista promotes more than just one big name like Carrie Underwood, Alicia Keys comes to mind as just one other. But there are several others. Arista is a huge Record Label Co.

They have picked up more than one Idol contestant also, Rueben, Clay Aiken... But you don't see them doing news interviews and using the promotion of Carrie Underwood because their album doesn't sale.

Evidently at 17 your album didn't sale either. Arista is not in the business of putting out first albums that don't have any showings to speak of. They gave you two chance, more than many get. Just maybe you don't have what the public is looking for now. Arista also knows what sells and doesn't sell.

Personally I didn't particularily care for you on Idol and if I recall you were always on the bottom two or three to be voted off by the public. Remember the public didn't put you on the show in the first place, the judges did. Just someone was worse than you at least until they weeded out three of the worst.

I don't thin Arista or Underwood are your problems. Looks to me you are one of those who think they know a lot more that the professionals who have been doing this way before you were born.

Maybe it's time to find a different profession.

I saw Kristy in Augusta, Ga. a couple of months ago and she was very good. The music industry isn't fair sometimes. I like Carrie but I think she is a little over blown and glitzy. I like my country music, country.

If the label dropped her it was because the album did not sell enough copies to launch a full promotion Kristie should not have brought Carrie's name into it because Arista handles alot of stars, Alicia Keys, Barry Manilow, Jamie Foxx just to name a few and all are doing just fine! A new album has to be able to do some type of attraction of its own such as when Carrie won Idol people were waiting and inquiring about the new album--Kristi just thought she shouldnt have to climb the success ladder but thats what it comes down too!

You got dropped because you stink, couldn't wait for you to get booted off American Idol, last thing I want to do is hear you on the radio! Thank you Arista!

I really wish some of you would leave your personal dislikes of Kristy as a person out of this and comment on the story (or non-story), or perhaps give something insightful. I'm sure "most" of you have never met her. :) Believe me, if you knew your favorite celebrities personally, a lot of them probably wouldn't be your favorite celebrity anymore.
And do read my comment on the previous page about how this story totally distorts the truth about what Kristy actually said. :)

I do not think the way to boost your career is too bag on one of the biggest recording artists, she failed to mention that carrie also wrote some of her music on the CD for her. She is just very negative and high on herself, that will not get her anywhere. As a member of the music community, working for a large label, we actually had a conversation about her, and we would never sign her because of her attitude.
