Kellie Pickler Adds Monkey to the Mix

Kellie Pickler has welcomed another new member into her ever-growing family. "And no, I didn't have a kid," she jokes on her MySpace page.

The singer -- and erstwhile zookeeper -- has adopted a marmoset monkey. "I'm not sure exactly what I am going to name her," says Pickler of her new addition, which currently weighs in at just three ounces. "She is so sweet, and she has the best personality. I absolutely love her."

Pickler admits she has no idea just how big the monkey will be when it grows up, but the marmoset won't lack companionship. Pickler's menagerie includes her Chihuahua Moo Moo, cat Pickles and the python she adopted last year.

Oh yeah....a marmoset is just like a dog, cat and snake. Dumb as rock.

The python can eat the chihuahua, the cat, or the monkey. The monkey will be curious and small enough to be easier prey. Monkeys and pythons should not be kept as pets unless you are a professional animal handler.

Keeping any kind of monkey or primate in a human home is not doing them any favors. A marmoset should be brought up with others of her kind. There are people who have trained to do this and there are sanctuaries where the marmoset can go, be with its own kind learn the things a marmoset should learn.
I hope that she gives up the marmoset with a donation to whichever sanctuary she chooses.
I hope Kellie does the right thing.

You guys need to lay off of Kellie. I work at a pet store that she comes into almost every day. Her animals are properly taken care of and she isn't dumb like you guys make her out to be. She has done her research, she comes in asking questions, educated questions. She takes care of her animals better than most of the animal owners out there.

people, it's a marmoset, when full grown it can ride the mexi-mutt like it was a horse! they're tiny, no bigger than your hand, they make a spider monkey look like king kong. google the thing before you make comments showing how dumb you are.

I did respite care for injured, lost, and abused animals. I have also taken care of lemurs and monkeys who were smuggled into this country by soldiers returning from peace-keeping missions. Before I could even QUALIFY for consideration for respite care (where I get an animal calmed and hopefully eating - then move it to rehab) I had to take a two week course from Fish and Wildlife, learn about the dietary need of any animal who came through my door. Monkeys bite, and can be quite mean. Even little marmosets don't play if they feel threatened. Lemurs, even though they are primarily vegetarian, have canines that can inflict a nasty bite... they are NOT pets. I hope she has a qualified animal handler around, or she's going to have ONE REALLY FAT PYTHON!

In order for her to get a young monkey it had to be forcibly taken away from it's Mother! They stay with their Mothers for a long time in nature and it's just NOT RIGHT to take them like this. She was probably KILLED to get the baby. This is why it became illegal to own monkies, so many females were killed to get the babies. What you did was just WRONG Kellie. It's NOT just all about YOU and what you want for the moment. They are not good "pets", they belong in the wild.

She'll probably have to cancel a tour because the monkey bit her.

"Pickler admits she has no idea just how big the monkey will be when it grows up"

It is the height of irresponsibility to obtain any pet without first learning about the proper care and handling, and obviously knowing the adult size is crucial to understanding how to provide long-term accomodations. NEVER get a pet until you know enough about it to provide proper care. And monkeys are just bad pets to begin with.
