Merle Haggard misses the good ole days. The 71-year-old country legend is still making music, with an upcoming double-disc project that he refuses to conform to modern country standards."I don't care for it," Haggard answered when asked by the Wyoming Tribune Eagle about the changes in country music today. "It's so perfect, and there are no surprises ... The electronic digital computer -- anyone can do a record nowadays. You don't have to stay in key -- they'll put you in key. You don't really know who can sing or can't until you see them in person. Then you're like, 'Oh my God, what happened?'"
In addition to his frustration with over-produced singers, Haggard also sees a lack of songs these days that will stand the test of time.
"I don't hear anything spectacular like you used to hear," he says. "Where's the 'Ring of Fire'? Where's 'The Gambler' or the 'Okie From Muskogee'? Where's those songs that didn't go wrong for 40 years? I don't hear those."
Haggard says he simply hasn't heard any new artists who impress him as much as his old favorites.
"I'm still a fan of the realists -- the Johnny Cashes or the Hank Williams. I can't find anyone who sings better than those guys ... Those people still top everybody that's doing it now.
"Who's going to be Elvis? Who is going to be better than Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra or Bing Crosby? Who are the girls you can name that are better than the girls in the past? Carrie Underwear, or Underwood, I mean. I like her, but where's the songs?"
Just three months after undergoing lung surgery, Haggard is already back on the road. He says he's singing even better than he was before his lung cancer scare and insists he hasn't smoked anything since 1992.

I am sorry, Merle, but I hate Okie From Muskogee. However, since I grew up in Texas, I had country music constantly shoved down my throat. I grew to despise country music.

If you despise it, why are you here readiong and writing about it?
Carolat 1-31-2009
Hey Frank, you don't have to like something in order to read about it!! And Merle is old school and just plain old. Can we say jealous?

I agree with everything Merle says. Name one song that is out today, that will matter 10 yrs from now, let alone 40 yrs from now.

Just one? "Moments" by Emerson Drive
And I don't ever stop liking my faves just cuz a few years pass by, be it decades or more. I don't care if they "matter" or not to the rest of the world, music is all subjective, and what "sounds good" depends on each person listening. Me, I like a *variety* of music, all the way from the 50s, 60s, thru the 90s, to now.

Right on, Dragster. I hate modern country. Not one of these clowns would have ever made it on Grand Ole Opry. Merle said it all.

Country music is the only kind of music worth listening to.I play it, I sing it and I love it!
Merle Haggard is my favorite. Look for someone else who can write like Merle.

for the most part todays poplar music shows alot of half nake girls shaking their butts at a camera while trying to be heard over the music repleting the same three words or maybe four

I agree with Merle. The forefathers/pioneers of country music would roll over in their graves if they could hear what country music has turned into. Actually Alan Jackson hit the nail on the head with the release of "Murder On Music Row" a few years back.

Actually it was George Strait who hit the nail on the head with Murder on Music Row, it was Alan JAckson who assisted him on it !

I don't think Merle dissed Carrie. I think he likes her voice but dislikes the songs. He says "I like her but wheres the songs?" Well, Merle, my friend you will have you songs in the Fall on 2008 when Carrie releases her new CD. She is writing herself as well as with new writers. You will get your songs so stay healthy and be patient.

Don't like the new country. Wouldn't give you a dime for a truckload of the new country c'ds.The classic country and the bill monroe /flatt and scruggs/jimmy martin. was music. If the new country, and movie stars was all the music i could hear. i would go to opera. would sound a LOT BETTER.

Merle, I could not have said it better. This new stuff isn't country. Alan & George Strait are about all we have now. Merle and George Jones will never be replaced.

Thank you Merle for a well put thought.
Most of the stars today couldn't make it in rock music, so they change costumes, retune a little, and scream their way into Country Music. The younger generation isn't smart enough to recognize, it ain't country music you are hearing.
