Rucker shares these intimate family photos exclusively with The Boot and talks about how country music was a good move for his entire party-of-five.
"We were gonna write a lullaby that I could sing to my kids," Rucker recalls of the writing session with Ashley Gorley and Chris DuBois that resulted in 'It Won't Be Like This for Long.' "It's just one of those songs that when you're done with it, it's like, 'Wow, I couldn't have said it to my kid any better than that.'"
"Just watching her, it breaks his heart/'Cause he already knows/It wont be like this for long/One day soon that little girl is gonna be/All grown up and gone."
As a dad to two daughters and a son, Rucker says those lyrics hit close to home.
"Having your kid break your heart is a big thing," he tells The Boot. "The last moment that really choked me up with my kids was just today. I was sitting on the bus and said, 'I'm gonna watch the ['It Won't Be Like This for Long'] video,' and in the middle of it, I was bawling. The kids are growing up so fast!"
Rucker is thankful he can be at home to watch them grow up, as the Hootie and the Blowfish frontman says his move from rock to country has proven more harmonious with his role as husband and father.
"I still thank God that music is my profession, but I hate to leave my kids and my wife and go on the road," Rucker laments. "But that's another great thing about being in country, [it's] so family-oriented. On Brad's [Paisley] tour, we worked three or four days a week and were home for three or four days, so that's a pretty good balance."
Rucker says all three kids are old enough to understand what he does for a living. But that certainly doesn't up his cool factor.
"Even though they get it, I'm still just Dad," he says with a laugh.
Darius Rucker, 'It Won't Be Like This for Long' Video
Darius the Dad...
On wife, Beth: "She worked at VH1, and she was in charge of taking care of us at a show once. We met there but didn't really start going out for three years [laughs]. I don't think she liked me too much."
On finally winning Beth over: "Consistency, consistency, consistency!"
On 13-year-old daughter, Cary: "She's grown into a beautiful, wonderful, smart woman. She makes me proud to be her dad, and I love her. She's funny, talented, smart and all the things you want your kids to be."
On 7-year-old daughter, Dani: "She wants to learn the guitar, so she's going to start lessons soon. I want them all to play something. Be like multi-virtuosos and we can have a rockin' family band!"
On 4-year-old son, Jack: "He's a little flirt! He's my boy; he's a good kid, he's got a lot of personality. He's a lot like his dad -- he's got my sense of humor. He's always trying to be funny."

why do people keep trying to make a big issue out of Rucker doing country when Hootie ALSO did country songs? Check out "Tootie" and several other songs on "Fairweather Johnson".....

TO:Kenat 2-20-2009 PLEASE GET A LIFE, YOU ARE SICK FOR EVEN THINKING SOMETHING PERVERTED! Our children do grow up very fast and if you get anything "SICK" from the song or the interview, you should seriously seek counseling. Darius has a beautiful voice and family. Please do not try to make something ugly of either.

I just attended an absolute incredible acoustic performance featuring Mr. Rucker with my 18 year old son, in which he performed the song "Let her cry". I would dance him to sleep when he was baby listening to that song and now there we were together listening to "It Won't Be Like This for Long"! It was an amazing moment!! Thank you for your music and music memories Mr. Rucker!!

Agreed...it's a beautiful song. I've always loved Hootie's singing. Beautiful family, all look so natural, and happy. Nice change from all the crap we see and hear about "stars" and their problems.

Beautiful song and and an even more beautiful family! Darius coming to country music was one of the best things to hit the genre in a long time.

Who cares about this guy!! He hasen't been relevant since 1994!!! his bad was mildly popular in a low point in music (1993 to present) why not do an article on the come back of Mott The Hoople. Yes Mott the Hoople back together for the first time in 34yrs. It will happern this October in London. That is bigger news than Hootie and the Blowfish!!! Please!!!!!!
