Story Behind the Song: 'Sissy's Song,' Alan Jackson

Alan Jackson talked to The Boot about the tragic inspiration behind his latest hit.

I wrote it for a girl that worked for us who died. She was a lady that looked after the whole house. Leslie Fitzgerald was her real name, but we called her Sissy. She had an accident on a motorcycle. She was 40-something. She was just somebody who was in our house everyday ... then all of a sudden [she was] gone. When people get old, you expect them to die, but it's different when they are young and it's tragic like that.

It's a real special song for me. I recorded it for the funeral, but [producer] Keith [Stegall] and I went into the studio one day and put the guitar and vocal down. It's just me and the guitar and the harmony parts. After some people heard it at the label, everybody wanted to put it on the album.

I heard Sissy's Song a week after losing my daughter to breast cancer at the age of 51 in Feb. 2010. It really said it all about my daughter. Thank you!

My sister-in-law and nephew passed away August 4th 2008 in a very traggic car accident. She was only 27, 2 months pregnant and her son was 3. They were hit head on and sadly her vehicle caught and fire and both died burned. Even till now its been hard not having them here with us. Everything happend unexpectically. My brother made this beautiful slide show with all the memories we had of them and included Brad Paisely song, "When I Get Where I'm Going". The day of their funeral when we played it everyone cried because she would always say she was not afraid to die because her father was waiting for her in heaven. And her son missed grandpa very much. The saddest part to this was that they passed away only feets away from where my father-in-law was buried. When I heard "Sissy's Song" it brought tears to my eyes because it felt like it was meant for them letting me know they are okay. And the video itself its simple but very beautiful. Mr.Jackson there's no other better way you could have sang or written this song, thank you very much.

My god, today was the first time I heard this song. It was on the way to breakfast with my husband. I lost my brother 14 years ago on August 12th 1995. I don't believe I ever got over his death. We were as close as a brother and sister could be. He being my younger brother. One night, he crashed his car into an old oak tree, in a blinding rain and thunder storm. All these words that Alan wrote brought back those memories of that night. I cried as I sat in the car on the way to breakfast. I WAS angry at God for taking my brother away from his wife, his children and most of all his family. It's taken years to deal with his sudden death, and I thank Alan Jackson for bringing some peace to me through music and lyrics of this beautiful beautiful song.
Thank you Mr. Jackson!! God Bless you!

Even though I lost my Mom almost seven years ago, I still miss her every day. Her Dad (my Grandpa) always called her "Sissy" so when I heard this song it automatically took me back to the day she was called home without warning.
I still can't hear this song without crying. But they are happy tears because I know she is in a wonderful place and this is just another way for her to remind those of us left behind..."don't worry 'bout me".
It seems like this song has touched so many families with its message. Even though the circumstances surrounding the loss of a beloved family member are all different it seems to fit each one just the same. It goes without saying that Mr. Jackson and his talent as a singer/songwriter are just another example of how the Lord works in mysterious ways.
When one man, with a few words he has put to music can reach so many different people and comfort them in their darkest hour, you have to believe that talent is heaven sent!

Almost at the time that this song was released my cousin lost her 16 year old son to an apparent suicide. The song is beautiful and a reminder of a young life lost.

My cousin's nickname is Sissy.

It is a very nice song, but please remember to search God's Word on what really happens to people when they die. I know the popular opinion is that they are in heaven watching over us, but this is not true according to the Bible. Although it's a special song, it's misleading. May God be with you as you search for thetruthaboutdeath.com.

i love allen jackson.i think he is great.country music has been my family favorite for many years.some of the music that is sung today is not country.i am 71 yrs old and i was raised with the old way.to me today some of them don't sing, they holler at the top of their lungs and you can't understand what they are saying.twisting and shaking going through all kinds of motins.i think allens wife is probably good, but i didn't think it was in good taste when she said at rhe special they had for himthat she credits herself for his fame,no he made his fame himself.he is doing the singing not her.she may have helped open the door for him.
