Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles Speaks Out on 'Idiotic' Backlash

She's been on vocal rest for the past few weeks, but Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles has plenty to say when it comes to the unfavorable comments some fans posted on message boards after learning that Sugarland had to cancel a few shows. The singer, who was under doctor's orders to take a break from performing to heal her strained vocal cords, admits she was both comforted and disappointed by some of the comments.

"I am never surprised as to the capacity of human beings to be wildly compassionate and loving -- nor completely and totally disrespectful and idiotic," Jennifer tells Music City TV, adding, "I understand people get disappointed and they love us and they love what we do. And they love what we do so much that they wish we were robots and could do it every second of every day and never have a cold or anything like that."

Jennifer's vocal problems flared up during recording sessions with singing partner Kristian Bush, causing the duo to cancel dates on Kenny Chesney's Sun City Carnival tour, including one in San Francisco -- a cancellation many fans were not aware of until they reached the admission gates. Kenny himself was annoyed with the outcry, saying, "It was really sad to see the way some people reacted to Jennifer needing to cancel her appearance in San Francisco ... we should all be concerned about her long-term vocal health more than any single show that she may not be able to do."

"It's very scary," Jennifer tells CMT Insider. "Because you think, 'All right, I can go out there - and I can do tomorrow -- but I may not do the rest of the year if I do tomorrow.' And that is terrifying. And that is when you say, 'Wait a minute. Let's pull back.'"

Sugarland returned to the concert stage last Thursday (July 30) in Bend, Ore. You can watch the superstar duo live in concert tonight (Aug. 3) at 8:00 PM ET on their ABC television special, 'Live on the Inside.'

Sorry but Jennifer Nettle's vocal style is too loud, too nasal, and very annoying. I cannot listen to her sing, and would never pay that much to see her in concert. What a waste of money.

Doesn't anyone on here think before they speak? Sadly, it's hard to comment on a lot of postings, because many people here can't spell and it's hard to make out what they're point even is. People are mad because she strained her voice and didn't put on a show. Probably the same people who get up, and call into work because they don't feel well. Is what she did much different? Saying she needs a boob job? I just scratch my head to that one.

People, wow...people can be so heartless. This is pitiful. I agree with Jennifer, the comments are disrespectful and idiotic. Were we not taught, NOT to be so selfish and heartless when we were kids or was it just me? I don't get it. Her voice is her livelihood, like she says, she either rests it for a bit.Or go out, RUIN it in one show, and never be able to do what she loves again.

Does anyone else have a passion for something? Would you risk never being able to do it again after one day, or take it easy, and be able to do it for a long time? This is why she was on vocal rest. Sugarland loves their fans so much, if many of you had a heart, you'd understand. They're completely grateful for all of their fans, you can see it in their eyes when they perform. They are human, just like the rest of us. Stuff happens, LIFE happens, plans fall through, and promises are broken, but life goes on, and typically people get over it.

Maybe her buddy Obama could stand in for her, I am sure the audience would love that.

If A-Rod pulled a hamstring, he'd go on the disabled list, and though the fans would be disappointed, they'd understand. Well, Jennifer's vocal cords are HER muscles, so stop criticizing! I want to hear that great voice for many years to come.
