Story Behind the Song: 'Good Lord and the Man,' John Rich

John Rich talked to The Boot about the third single from his solo album, 'Son of a Preacher Man.'

'Good Lord and the Man' is about my grandfather, 'Papaw' Rich. He had six purple hearts in World War II. He lied about his age and told them he was 18 when he was really 17, so they'd let him in the Army. He went over and became a bonafide war hero. There's a line in the song that says, "We'd all be speaking German or living under the flag of Japan, if it wasn't for the good Lord and the man." I don't think you can find an American who disagrees with that statement. When I wrote that line, I looked down at the page and thought, 'I don't know if I can say that or not.' But then I realized it probably won't upset people, because it's the truth! The World War II generation saved the world.

Yeah, the Germans and Irish really had a hard time getting loans for Houses once WW2 was over, while all the Blacks and Japanese were getting all the money to move out to Surburbia. So why complain? We went over to Japan and Germany to fix what they had destroyed, and left non-whites in America in poverty with no way to get out. And yes, I do believe the American government introduced drugs into ghetto areas, like they flooded the American-Indian Reservations (Concentration Camps) with alcohol and lots of carbohydrates so that the sedetary Indians would get diabetes and eventually get their limbs cut off. Yeah, you know that whites do it for the good of all non-whites, cuz non-whites don't know any better. Almost every white person I know is dying because a Black president was elected, and they cannot stand it (2008), yeah, that doesn't happen here anymore, not today. Hitler made one mistake, he declared war on a people who had no conscience.

Wow look at all the post from all sides. I don’t normally add to this internet wasteland but thought I would throw in my 2 cents.
Most of the haters are from 3rd world countries. I include England as a third world country since central heating and hot water are still not standard in houses. They are taught in school that America let them get beat down to the verge of invasion before helping out. BS. The US had/has a large population of German ancestry and they didn’t want to go to war against their father land. The British and French should have kept Germany under control but they didn’t. Much like other events in Europe where no other country want to keep an eye on their neighbors until war breaks out, then it’s cry for the USA to help out. If the US gets in too early they are criticized, if they come I too late they are criticized. You can’t win. It happens over and over again.
You ever notice the WWII uniforms of the French, Polish and most other German occupied countries. They are US uniforms. The US supplied and fed them. How about repaying some of that now?
Russia, those dumb asses signed a treaty with Germany. Even as the German armies massed up at their border they thought a piece of paper would stop the invasion. Oh BTW who supplied them with food and supplies?
Atomic bomb? Based on the casualties of previous Asian invasions, it was determined that there would be 1 million allied casualties for the invasion and occupation of Japan, mostly Americans. The British would have stopped for tea on the beach. Several million Japanese would have died. So you do the math, how many people were saved by using the bomb? Don’t apply today’s public opinion against a war over 60 years ago. Civilian targets were acceptable back then. Every one bombed civilian targets. The Japanese raped and murdered its way across the Asian theater. They even sent balloon bombs across the Pacific to target US civilians.
I probably missed some dumb ass comments, can catch them all.
I saw a bumper sticker that read, “What part of Europe are you from? The part whose ass we saved or the part whose ass we kicked.”

Every single flag waving patriotic message in here is THE SAME. It's all about kickin' ass and savin' ass and fightin' for your freedom and God Bless America. Since I was a kid I've been hearing all this chest beating, over the top, pseudo-patriotic talking about savin' ass and kickin' ass. We saved your ass buddy. It's amazing how this current generation is always taking credit for someone else's ass saving. My point is this. There is just way too much talk about ass in here. Stop talkin' about asses. This isn't prison.

If you did read your histoy about WWII you will find that whoever authored the materiel your reading will slant the burdon of battle to their country of origin. The U.S.did not have a big enough army to put into the field in 1939 or the equipment to arm it.Remember the apeasements to Nazi Germany by Chamberland.None of the allies had enough war equipment. The U.S. was providing food, arms and all other goods plus retooling to manufacture arms.It took time nothing is as instant as todays communication. The words in the song are true. Without the allies things would be very different all countries involved suffered and sacraficed. The only countries that were prepared for WWII were the Axis Powers. The Axis started it the Allies finished it.My late father started at Normandy on June 6,1944 and fought all across France, Belgum,Holland,Luxumberg,"the Bulge" Germany as did 6 of my uncles. Two other uncles fought in the Pacific at Guadacanal,Tarawa,Saipan,Iwo Jima and Okinawa.Other U.S. families had just as many if not more family members fighting and dying as my family. All those involved to win that war were HEROES.

callumjstewart,

I figured you were from the U.K., more possibly Scotland, which I hope isn't true. The more I hear from U.Kers like you, the more the dream of visiting my ancestrial homeland dwindles. I don't want to visit and find a country filled of people like you. I'll stay in the land I was born and raised in as well as gave me my freedoms. I'll just hold on to the "image" of your land of what I wished it was!

Oh, ye of little brain. I'm not from America you

I disagree. We would be speaking English but you would be speaking German. Their airforce was already bombing the hell out you. You had lost and the Yanks came to your rescue. Are you still winning the war with the Irish or still getting your a-- kicked again.

If you are going to criticize someone for punctuation, grammar or spelling, you need to damn well make sure you grammar spelling and punctuation are perfect. If not, you will look like a low grade moron.

"Oh, ye of little brain. I'm not from America you absolute thundering backside. I live in the UK and apprciate what OUR men (not women, they didn't fight in WW2 laserbrain) did. My own grandfather fought and died in WW2, so I have a better perspective than most you pinheaded imbicile.

Oh, and by the way, punctuation in your friend."

There are two instances in you post where you left out commas, you incorrectly spelled "imbecile" and "appreciate" and finally you had better go back and review history before you discount the significance of American involvement in WWII.

Had America not been forced into the War by the cowardly Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, you would most likely be writing your post in German. With Italy and Germany allied, France, Poland, Austria Hungary Czechoslovakia, Romania and Bulgaria under German control, Britain's chance of withstanding Hitler's aggression were slim. The only other ally at the time was Russia. I stated before that you would be writing your post in German had America not intervened, but I am wrong, forgive me. Nazi government would not even allow you Internet access and would probably have you and your family shot for trying to communicate across the borders.

My father fought in WWII, in Italy and he survived. He told ma a lot about the wonderful people he met in Europe. It's a good thing he and other American soldiers met people like them rather than people like you. Otherwise our soldiers would have asked "Why are we helping these people?" and gone home.

But what did we get out of it? We are vilified by European press and hated by those we once saved. We even forgave billions of dollars in war debts. Do you think Russia would have been so kind?

gartringen. The US should have left Germany keep bombing the hell out of you. You had already lost and were running for bomb shelters. Your airforce couldn't do anything either. Maybe you would feel better if you were speaking German. But of course you still can't whip the Irish and you've been trying for how many years???? And soon you will be wearing Muslim clothing having to pray to Allah, oh but wait. We'll have to call the Yanks to bail us out again.
