Wynonna Says Taylor's CMA Entertainer Win Is 'Too Soon'

Wynonna and Taylor SwiftTaylor Swift's victory, at age 19, as the youngest CMA Entertainer of the Year has been the topic of much discussion and analysis. But it's a comment made by a former Entertainer of the Year nominee, Wynonna Judd, that fired up after the awards show -- and was just as quickly defused!

When asked about Taylor's Entertainer nomination in an interview before the CMA Awards show, Wynonna told USA Today, "You want my honest comment? It's too much too soon."

The singer, who was 22 when she and her mother Naomi were nominated in 1986 -- making her previously the youngest artist to be nominated in that category -- added, "Mom and I rode in a car for the first year of our career to visit radio stations. There was a making of the star, there was a rising up, and the fans went with us. Now it's over coffee breaks, the success, almost. It's like the girl who wins an Oscar and she's under 20. What do you do from here?"

Wynonna quickly clarified her remarks on her website's message board, saying,

I understand that my comment about Taylor Swift's Entertainer of the Year nomination came across as a negative statement. My intent was not to take anything away from her talent and contributions to the country music industry ... all of which are truly unprecedented for an artist of ANY age. Taylor is a beautiful, hard working young woman that deserves the success she has had and I support her as an artist and as a woman in the business."

Backstage during the CMAs, Wynonna and Naomi also hinted they may do more shows together in 2010. The act officially retired at a farewell concert in 1991 but have reunited at several special events since that time.

Taylor has more grace, class and talent than any of her sour grapes critics will ever have. Let me guess Wynonna, had Taylor gotten the award in, say, another 3 years or so, then the timing would have been okay? Just so long as she wasn't taking YOUR record away... seriously, Wynonna should have known better than to say anything so critical, since obviously it would be construed that way. Taylor worked her butt off every bit as hard as you did, Ms. Judd... she's been walking into record companies handing out demos since she was 8, and sat on the floor hand addressing each one of the copies of "Tim McGraw" that went out to radio stations. You are picking on the WRONG GIRL for gaining success "on coffee breaks". How spiteful and cruel.

I gotta' agree with the sour grapes part - but maybe it is also a reflection of what entertainment is today. Maybe she truely is the best of what is offered these days. For Wynona Judd to make a comment like that and not having produced much of anything in the last year - she afraid to be consigned to the annals of CM history? Taylor Swift has been thrust into the limelight because she is a breath of fresh air compared with all the scandals, DWIs, and bad behavior of those "seasoned performers."

chessrmeat - when did u become the grammar and spelling police? Judgmental, old COW. Do u have nothing better to do in your crappy little world than to find fault and criticize? I can understand if you aren't getting laid. Who'd wanna? You'd probably just lay there lifeless (as always) and take notes on how their performance could be better and how the dirty talk isn't being done in complete sentences. You miserable bag of crap. Go fornicate yourself.

I don't listen to Taylor Swift she is too teeny bop for me, but she appears to have a solid head on her shoulders, and to have a long career ahead of her.
Definetly thank goodness not a Lindsey Lohan type.

Awards are just that-awards nothing more. They don't always go to the best, sometimes the lucky, the most popular or the most relevant at the time get the award. Think Christopher Cross as best
new artist or Elizabeth Taylor best actress in
butterfield eight. Remember that?

Anyway, only time will tell. Maybe she will burn out, retire, get fat, have babies, have 5 or 6 husbands, turn to acting, be born again, find Jesus, do charity work and have a long respectable career based on a body of work that has improved and grown into maturity.

All I know is that right now, she is an impossibly skinny lightweight talent that has any adult without a teenager wondering who the hell she is. I know I am scratching my head. But they are just awards, nothing more. She could just be a blip on the radar.

1) Taylor Swift is a very talented songwriter.
2) She does not have a strong voice and sings poorly live (in fact, lots of performers sound awful on these awards shows. I hope they sound better at their concerts.)
3) She certainly was the Entertainer of the Year. This year, she was the hottest performer. Female Vocalist of the Year? Um, no.
4) Of course the industry wants to hitch their wagon to her star - it also benefits others country artists when that genre is getting attention. She's not the first "country" artist to have pop crossover appeal, but she's got enough "country" about her.
5) She needs to stay still when she sings - stop flinging her hair, splaying her legs when standing and she looks awkward dancing.
6) It's sad to see Wynonna still looking so horrible - the fake tan, weird makeup, too white teeth, horrible hair. Although her face appears to show she has lost some weight. She is one woman in need of a major makeover.
4)

I agree with Wynonna. Taylor is very talented and pretty. She deserved the other awards but I do think Entertainer of the Year should go to some of those stars who have had a very good year in music but have also paid their dues through years of hard work and stamina. It is a coveted award and should be given with more serious thought. I understand these awards are done by a majority vote from those in the industry, much like the majority votes on American Idol so sometimes it is not about the most deserving or talented but the most popular.
