Darius Rucker Interview: 11 Questions

Darius RuckerSince he launched his solo career in 2008 with his debut hit, 'Don't Think I Don't Think About It,' Darius Rucker has become the golden boy of country music. His followup releases, 'It Won't Be Like This for Long' and 'Alright,' both soared up the charts, landing Darius three consecutive No. 1 hits. His latest single, 'History in the Making,' is currently climbing the Top 10, well on its way to becoming another chart-topper for the former Hootie & the Blowfish lead singer.

This month, Darius will head back into the studio to begin work on his sophomore country album and once again hit the road with Rascal Flatts on the last leg of their American Living Unstoppable tour. Before gassing up the tour bus, Darius spent five minutes with The Boot, answering 11 random questions about his love of sports, family life and the one celebrity he's thankful not to be right now!

Who do you think is the most underrated country music star?

Miranda Lambert. Love her! Love, love, looove her. She should be a superstar. [Her songwriting] is straight to the point.

Which teams do you predict will be in the Super Bowl this year?

I would say the Minnesota Vikings and the San Diego Chargers.

What game show do you think you would be a good contestant on?

'Jeopardy.' If they had the right categories, I'd be great! [laughs]

What website do you visit every day?

From August up until now, the ESPN Fantasy Football site. I was just on it before I called you! [laughs]

What celebrity have you been mistaken for in your career?

I don't know if I've been mistaken for him before, but a lot of people like to joke with me and say, "Hey Cuba!" -- Cuba Gooding, Jr. after the 'Jerry Maguire' movie.

What celebrity would you not want to be right now?

The coach of the Cleveland Browns. [laughs] I don't think he's going to have a job next year.

What is something that freaks you out?

I didn't know this until my MRI the other day, but I'm claustrophobic. My back's bad, and they were looking at it. [It's bad] from golf. They can do whatever they need to do as long as I can play golf! [laughs]

What is something you absolutely have to have with you when you are out on tour?

I must have my PlayStation 3. One in the front of the bus and one in the back. I have to have two of them! [laughs]

What is your favorite room in your house?

I'm sitting in it right now. It's called my 'Man Room.' I have six TVs in here. The smallest one is 42 inches, and the biggest one is 70 inches. I love it!

What are three things you cannot live without?

I can't live without my family, golf and football.

What is the one piece of advice you have been given that you have actually followed in life?

My mom told me a long time ago, "It is so much easier to be nice to someone than it is to be mean." I try to live by that every day.

"...but there's another famous name he's still called." Really? Let me guess. Is it, "Still Always Singing Flat" Rucker? T-i-i-i-me, why you punish me...

Just a note. It's always good to do research before you begin writing an article. Darius Rucker's solo career was launched with his debut album, "Back to Then", which was an R&B album. His solo career did not begin in 2008, as the writer stated. The interviewer / writer really does his career a disservice...

I just have to wander whether the omission of Darius Rucker's debut album, "Back to Then", was intentional or just an oversight. Even the people who have commented and who claim to be fans of Rucker only seem to mention his 2 sounds, Hootie and country. But there was a lot of music made by Rucker in the mean time and in between time, some of which wasn't rock or country. Hey, I have no problem with the dominant culture embracing Rucker because, for me, Rucker transcends genre. He's a talented guy. But please don't co-opt him and re-brand him as only hootie and country by negating whole sections from his body of work. Before his was doing country, he was doing a duet with Jill Scott......
