Zac Brown Band Urged to Go 'Tofu-Fried'

The Boot received a personal email today from animal activist group PETA, in regards to the Grammy's Best New Artist winners the Zac Brown Band and their No. 1 hit song, 'Chicken Fried.' It seems PETA would like Zac and his bandmates to change the menu on their pre-show "eat-and-greets," where select fans are offered a big plate of pork, beef and all the fixin's.

"If PETA has its way, the 'Chicken Fried' singers will be hosting an all-vegan edition of their celebrated 'eat and greets' for fans," a rep for PETA wrote to us.

"We're writing today in the hope that you'll extend your love of freedom to animals," PETA continues, addressing the band. "In your song 'Chicken Fried,' you praise the simple pleasures of life -- a cool drink, a home filled with love, enjoying the sunshine -- all pastimes denied to the millions of cows, pigs, chickens, and other animals raised for food on factory farms every year."

PETA is sending the band a basket of protein-rich faux meats, like tofu, along with their letter. Read it in its entirety, after the jump.

No word yet whether the Zac Brown Band will alter their menu selection, but don't expect any lyric modifications to 'Chicken Fried' any time soon! Besides, what would Blake Shelton think? (And we can't wait to hear what he thinks ... or tweets.)

ZBB's latest single, 'Highway 20 Ride,' is inching its way closer to the Top 10 country singles chart where it could become their fourth consecutive No. 1 hit from their album, 'The Foundation.'
_______

Dear Zac, Jimmy, John, Coy, Clay, and Chris,

Greetings from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), and congratulations on your Grammy win for Best New Artist! As you may know, PETA is the largest animal rights organization in the world, with more than 2 million members and supporters dedicated to the protection of animals. You have many fans here at PETA.

We're writing today to ask you to extend your love of freedom to animals by agreeing to partner with us on a veggie "eat and greet" for your fans. In your song "Chicken Fried," you praise the simple pleasures of life-a cool drink, a home filled with love, enjoying the sunshine-all pleasures that are denied to the millions of cows, pigs, chickens, and other animals raised for food on factory farms every year.

Life on the farm isn't what it used to be. Green pastures and idyllic barnyards have been replaced by windowless, cramped, filthy metal sheds. Animals are treated as nothing more than products, with little regard for their health, happiness, or basic needs. Pigs are often confined to concrete stalls so small that they can't even turn around, chickens are fed antibiotics and grow so large that their legs become crippled from supporting their own weight, and cows are slaughtered and dismembered while they are still conscious and able to feel pain.

The good news is that it's easier than ever to enjoy delicious, cruelty-free meals! To show just how tasty a plant-based diet can be, we're sending you a basket of delicious, protein-rich faux meats. We hope you will enjoy these cruelty-free products with your friends and family and will consider working with us to help spread a message of compassion and freedom for all living beings in this world.

PETA stands for People Enjoying Tasty Animals.
On the serious side, everyone needs to tell these perverts to just shut up and go away! They can practice being vegans all they wish for all I care...but trying to force your will others is wrong...it is no better than trying to force people to embrace your religion with no regard to the person's needs or wishes.
And that @%$#%@^ tofu is toxic to some people. Soybean and peanut products send me to the hospital with anaphylactic shock (life threating). One size does not fit all in this case. So go pedal your toxic dreams elsewhere, PETA

Vegetarian...an old Native American word for "bad hunter."

PETA you have a right to eat anyway that you want. However, you do NOT have a right to tell anyone else how they must eat. You put animals above people, which makes you ignorant morons. Get a life and leave the rest of the world alone. We don't agree with you and never will. So leave the rest of us alone and go blow away somewhere, so we don't have to listen to your uneducated crap anymore.

look at the group! (except Coy)
all of them would benefit from a lot less food (meat) and a lot more vegetables!
they all are over weight (FAT) and some are nearing morbid obesity!
those of you that want to reply to my FAT comment... Kiss My ASS.
over 60% of Americans are FAT!

Peta is collection of overpaid, underworked hollywonks who thinks normal people pay attention to their drivel. They dress and act like a--holes who really believe that they should be able to dictate how they rest of us live. Just go away to Sweden or Norway or some other puke foreign country.

You can find meat that is properly raised, it's the only kind I eat, but it is usually much more expensive which often limits how often you eat the pricier meats. The reason it costs more is because it takes longer to grow the animal (because it doesn't have a bunch of drugs pumped into it so it will grow fast) and it can be costly to provide the acreage and other care. It's worth it, you get good healthy meat and you know they are treated humanely while being raised. Plus you still get to eat meat!

PETA isn't as holy as they claim.

Here's the link to a message board, along with a poster who was able to do more homework on the matter than I could...

Actually…

Here’s an articl from a more reputable - if dated - source: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2005/06/23/EDG11DC9BK1.DTL

See their policy on Euthanasia: http://www.peta.org/mc/factsheet_display.asp?ID=39

Thw 90% number is most likely exagerated, but they still do put down quite a few animals.

In this thread, they refer to this link for one PETA facility in Norfolk, Virginia. The percentages listed here (as reported by the faclity) are 21% of companion animals and 94% for wildlife.

It would be quite easy to substitute the number for wildlife for that of companion animals…

Still, these numbers are much higher than most of the “humane socitey” and “SPCA” shelters. One thing PETA is adamant about is they don’t run shelters, but will euthanise the animals humanely instead of other means of death. Bottom line is they still kill animals in these cases, but they are “right” to kill in these cases based on their beliefs. Just like I am right to eat animals based on my beliefs
