Rascal Flatts have not only been one of country music's most successful acts, but their tight harmonies and well-crafted lyrics have worked their way into the pop world, well ahead of the recent crossover success of artists such as Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum. But the trio aren't surprised by their influence. They're just surprised it went unnoticed for so long.
"It's kind of amazing that people are just now finding out about it," Flatts guitarist/pianist Jay DeMarcus admits to The Boot. "Not to sound boastful ... but I think there was a movement that was started with us and Keith Urban, that paved the way for country to cross over a little more easily, with the pop-flavored country music that we know today."
And while they have yet to see one of their own singles go all the way to No.1 on the pop chart, the Flatts are still bursting with pride for artists who do achieve that feat. "I'm so proud to see the success that someone like Taylor is having," Jay says. "I think there's a void there that country music has been able to fill, and artists like Taylor and Keith and Lady A are filling those voids."
The trio especially have their eyes on Taylor, partly because they take some of the ownership in her soaring career. "Taylor did the same thing we did three or four years ago," Gary LeVox continues, "because we had out-sold everybody in every genre of music, and Taylor did the same thing this year. So I think after a few years of it starting to take hold ... I think that's why every artist from everywhere tries to come over and get into country music."
The boys will have even more exposure this week, when their latest hit, 'Unstoppable,' will be featured at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. They are also continuing their American Living Unstoppable tour in 2010, as well as working on another album.

Yeah, because Rascal Flatts are the first country act to cross over to pop... gimme a f'n break. They weren't country to begin with.

I read somewhere that Rascal Flatts band was ticked off that Taylor Swift won some award that they thought they should've got? Poor losers-I never could stand them-I wouldn't go to one of their shows if the tickets were free!

That's just crap.
Wasn't Rascal Flatts on Star Seach years ago? Isn't that how they got their start?
Taylor rose to where she is thanks to hard work and relating to a genre of "tween"agers in writing and singing her OWN songs which may I remind R Flatts that she won her latest award with an album of songs written by herself! She is not some mass, heavliy produced teen idol. Shame on you for trying to take credit. If she opened for any of your shows, they only sold out because she was featured. I am sure half the crowd left after her show not sticking around for yours.

That is something I wouldn't advertise-Taylor can't sing and her Grammy performance proofs it along with the CMA's and VMA's. Read some of the outrage against her supposed talent and how the "people" have finally awokened to the fact Taylor can't sing and she sing speaks. Hopefully the industry has finally put Kanye West to rest and will finally see that she cannot sing!

Wow. How disappointing to hear from them. And what an insult to artists like Shania and LeeAnn Womack who each had very successful crossover hits on their own before anyone had ever even heard of Rascall Flatts. And I'm pretty sure country artists have had cross-over appeal since as early as the 50's and 60's so this just seems an overwhelming insult to all the artists that came before them. Guess I'll be selling my Flatt's concert tickets on eBay!

Elvis Presley and Patsy Cline crossed over long before the Flatts. Then in the 1970's there was Dolly Parton, Glenn Campbell, John Denver, Kenny Rogers, Alabama, and the Bellemy Brothers just to name a few. The early 80's continued to see cross overs. We had a slight die down in the late 80's then in the 90's welcome GARTH BROOKS, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, and (like 'em or not) the Dixie Chicks.
I'm sorry but the road was paved for Rascal Flatts by a lot of other truely great artists. Its sad that they have no clue about country music history. Taylor Swift is Taylor Swift because of her talent, not theirs. Get over yourself guys.

It's refreshing to read comments that are on topic and obviously written by a fan who knows their stuff! Nicely done!

So I guess the crossover success of Shania, Faith Hill, and Reba means nothing. Racsal Flatts and Taylor Swift do have one thing in common. Niether one of them are country. Taylor is this genrations Debbie Gibson. At least Debbie could sing.
