George Jones is a country music legend who's accomplished just about everything an artist could, yet at 78 years old, he's still out there rocking the stage night after night and drawing in new legions of fans. A member of the Country Music Hall of Fame with Grammys, ACMs and CMA awards to his credit, the singer affectionately known as The Possum, has had quite a few career-making moments and earned some impressive fans along the way. So who's the fan he was most surprised to find he had during one of the biggest highlights of his long and storied career? George tells the Athens-Banner Herald he learned of her adoration in 2008, when he was feted at the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors ceremony alongside Barbra Streisand and Morgan Freeman.
"The Kennedy Center Honors was truly one of the highlights of my career," says George, who also received the 2002 Medal of Arts from President Bush. "I was very surprised at the number of stars that turned out to perform in my honor and the number of celebrities and politicians that knew me. After the awards, they had a nice dinner for everyone, and I was making my way to our table, and Caroline Kennedy [daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, for who the Kennedy Center is named] stopped me and said, 'I just have to meet George Jones!' I was shocked!"
On Feb. 23, Time Life is issuing 'George Jones: The Great Lost Hits,' a 2-CD collection of the singer's rare, mostly out-of-print recordings originally released on the Musicor label between 1965 and 1972. A special 12-track, single CD version will also be exclusively available at Wal-Mart.
