As a singer, Miley Cyrus has had greater success on the pop chart than she has on the country chart. And while she noted earlier this week that she plans to take on more acting roles rather than continue to pursue her music career for the time being, the daughter of country hitmaker (and fellow actor) Billy Ray Cyrus probably won't endear herself to country fans anyway, with one of the statements from a recent interview."It scares me," she tells PARADE magazine. "It feels contrived on so many levels. Unless you're wearing a cowboy hat and cowboy boots and singing and whining about your girlfriend or boyfriend leaving you it's not going to sell. I think that's why my dad finally got out of it. You have to wear those cowboy boots and be sweet as pie. It makes me nervous, the politics of it all."
Miley recently recorded three versions -- including a country take -- of a song called 'Nothing to Lose,' with Poison frontman Bret Michaels.
The 17-year-old did have some flattering things to say about her godmother, Country Music Hall of Famer Dolly Parton: "She is the nicest person in the world. She's so easy to talk to. She's awesome. I love her. She always tells me just to do what I love and if I'm not having fun it's not working. I don't know how old she is at this point but every time she is on the stage she is smiling from ear to ear."
Miley's latest film, 'The Last Song' opens March 31.

contrived....unlike the disposable world of pop music.
she's young, so you want to give her a pass, but her words are a prime example of success not necessarily making you smarter.

OMG, she doesn't have the same opinion of me. She's stupid.
musicandkaraokeat 3-18-2010
Then country music is not where she needs to be. She's not country anyway, neither are others who attempt to go there just because there's no place else for them to go. A square peg don't fit in a round hole. Could that be a country title right there?

country music is really contrived. she is 100% right (trust me i feel dirty agreeing with her on anything) but modern country music is bogus. I want the old stuff give me johnny cash.

It seems to me that the "whining" songs, or what some of us call ACTUAL COUNTRY MUSIC is what doesn't "sell" anymore. I haven't seen a cowboy hat in years. Country music is (or at least used to be) so much more than torn jeans and designer boots that are made to look 20 years old. The music used to be distinguishable from anything else. Now, it sounds like everything else.
What happened to virtuosos like Weldon Myrick and Ralph Mooney? Nobody remembers who they were, just like nobody remembers what Country music is supposed to be.
For the record, Billy Ray Cyrus' pretty-boy a** shaking was about as un-country as his daughter. I, for one am glad he isn't recording anymore, but it would be nice if he'd stop using his daughter to get back in the spotlight.
By the way, Miley, until YOU can tell me who Weldon Myrick is, SHUT UP! Nobody values your teenage opinion.
PERFECT example of a celebrity running her mouth when she doesn't know what she's talking about.

right on about the torn jeans, etc. check out some folks like jason borland and his new cd. THAT'S what country ought to be...twin fiddles, steel guitars, as they say, "Pure Country".

What Miley does not get is that when you have no talent to start with, all music seems contrived.
She and her achy breaky father have the musical ability of a group swamp frogs. CROAK! CROAK!

Hey, Tom & Judy, Their acting isn't any better either.
Tom & Judyat 3-18-2010
Reply to Tommy: right on brother. But I think there "Photo-op" pics might push the envelope on the word "acting."

I agree with Miley about MOST of TODAY'S country music. Taylor Swift is a PRIME example. It's all the same formula. As for the comment that pop music is just as "contrived", you're sadly mistaken. The term "pop" comes from the word "popular" and today's pop music is more diverse that country music has ever been. There are more artists who cross genres into pop today than ever before. From groups like Disturbed with "Land of Confusion" and Miley Cyrus' "The Climb" to Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' "Empire State of Mind", today's pop music follows only one formula - popularity. If the masses like it, it works. No cowboy hat or boots required.

First of all, if you really listen and watch,Miley Cyrus is a "natural" singer and actress! She just has a gift. Her comments should be attributed to her age and in time we'll see. If you remember, Billy Ray was also surrounded by controversy at one time, but if you really LISTEN to his music you will see how good he is. As for Dolly Partin, I told my wife about a year ago that Dolly and Miley should record a song together.

A singer natural for who or what? I think she has a terrible voice and I do not think she would even make it to the top 50 on Idol. I think she just happened to get into the buisness when her father was a big deal a long time ago and someone sold her to the country. She must have a great manager to be able to sell her! If she was smart, take the money and run, go hide before you fall on your face like your dad did and end up in rehab like all the other spoiled wealthy kids riding on there parents wealth. Sorry, only telling the truth as I see it.
dscott1575at 3-18-2010
Yeah. Well. It is contrived. Although I'm not so sure about the "sweet as pie" stuff.
