Reba McEntire created something of a singular sensation in the Broadway hit 'Annie Get Your Gun' in 2001. Now the Great White Way wants the country superstar back to play the title role in a revival of another show about a plucky heroine, 'The Unsinkable Molly Brown.' On Tuesday, May 18, the New York Post reports, Reba attended a elaborately staged reading of the show as a favor to director Kathleen Marshall, who is directing the singer in another upcoming show, the revival of the classic 'Anything Goes.'"Everybody wants her to do a show, but she's very hard to cast," The Post quotes a producer as saying. "This is a good role for her."
'Molly' tells the story of the real-life Molly Tobin, who at 15 years old married a miner named "Leadville" Johnny Brown, who later struck gold and silver (to the tune of $20 million) in the mountains of Colorado. After trying to break into high society in Denver, Molly moved to Europe and became world famous as a survivor of the sinking Titanic, saving others in her lifeboat by wrapping them in her furs.
Interestingly, Reba's connection to Molly Brown goes back several years -- she was slated to play the (non-singing) role in the blockbuster film 'Titanic' in 1997, but had to drop out due to her touring schedule. Molly was played in the film by Oscar winner Kathy Bates.
