Lee Greenwood, 'God Bless the USA' - Story Behind the Lyrics

'God Bless the USA' is a patriotic song written by Lee Greenwood and first released as a single in 1984. It reached No. 7 on the country charts. That year, the song was played at the Republican National Convention with President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan in attendance. And it would gain more prominence after the launch of Operation Desert Storm during the Gulf War in 1991, and following the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001.

The Boot caught up with Lee at his home in Nashville to talk about the inspiration for this enduring hit.

I wanted to write it my whole life. When I got to that point, we were doing 300 days a year on the road, and we were on our fourth or fifth album on MCA. I called my producer, and I said I have a need to do this. I've always wanted to write a song about America, and I said we just need to be more united.

"I'm from California, and I don't know anybody from Virginia or New York, so when I wrote it -- and my producer and I had talked about it -- [we] talked about the four cities I wanted to mention, the four corners of the United States. It could have been Seattle or Miami but we chose New York and L.A., and he suggested Detroit and Houston because they both were economically part of the basis of our economy – Motown and the oil industry, so I just poetically wrote that in the bridge.

"When I put it on stage ... I think it was the fall of '83, I put it in the middle of the show just as a brand-new song. Wow, it was like the audience jumped up, and they were applauding. It helps to have a career that is really exploding to bring a song to bear that is palpable. I did it for about two weeks like that and then I had to put it at the end of the show as an encore. I couldn't follow it.

"It keeps having a different kind of life. I mean during the Gulf War, it was a song of the war for General Schwarzkopf. After Hurricane Katrina, it was a song for life and hope, and then after 9/11, it was a song of unity and rebuilding. It just makes me really proud that I've done something for the country and for my family. It's my family's heritage.

"I recorded the 'American Patriot' album. That album was a way to embrace 'God Bless the USA' with all other American songs including 'God Bless America,' 'America the Beautiful,' 'The National Anthem' ... even the 'Battle Hymn of the Republic.' The 'American Patriot' album really was the one that solidified 'God Bless the USA' in a time capsule, if you will, for all time."

OH SAY CAN YOU SEE ACROSS OUR FAIR LAND
MONUMENTS HALLOWING FIELDS WHERE THEY STAND
OVER HILL AND DALE COUNTLESS ROW AFTER ROW,
PATRIOTS IN DEFENSE OF OUR RIGHTS DID THEIRS FOREGO.
SACRED STONES EACH STAND TRIBUTE TO THE LIFE OF ONE,
WHO HONORABLY KEPT THE TRUST PASSED FATHER TO SON,
TO ASSURE THAT THE BANNER WOULD FOREVER WAVE,
O’ER THE LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE.

FROM THE FOUNDERS DECLARATION IN FREEDOM’S HALL,
TO THE SONS OF FOREFATHERS STILL ANSWERING THE CALL.
TO PRESERVE OUR FREEDOM, GALLANT HEROES ARE LOST.
DEVOTED TO THE STARS & STRIPES, WILLING TO SUFFER THE COST
LEST WE FORGET THE SAME FLAG THAT MAJESTICALLY WAVES
OVER OUR FREEDOM, SOLEMNLY DRAPES OVER THEIR GRAVES.
FOR THE PRICE OUR FINEST HAVE PAID, THE BANNER DOTH YET WAVE
O’ER THE LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE.

THESE WORDS WERE WRITTEN AS I THOUGHT ABOUT FRANCIS SCOTT KEY AS HE WROTE THEM WATCHING BY LIGHT OF BOMB BLAST TO SEE WHICH FLAG WOULD PERVAIL AND INSPIRED BY MR. GREENWOOD'S WORDS. THAT THE FLAG IS OUR GREAT REPRESENTATION THAT BINDS US. THEY WOULD WORK IN PERFECTLY IN AN ORCHESTRATION OF MR. GREENWORD'S SONGS AND ARE WRITTEN TO THANK AND RESPECT OUR MILITARY. WHEN THE LAST US CITIZEN IS NO LONGER WILLING TO PUT ON THAT UNIFORM AND RISK THEIR LIFE TO PROTECT THIS COUNTRY THEN A NEW FLAG WILL BE FLYING ON THE FLAG POLES OF THIS GREAT LAND. THINK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF THESE WORDS, PASS THEM ON TO YOUR FRIENDS AND LETS HAVE A PATRIOTIC RISING OF AMERICANS WHO LOVE AMERICA, WHO BELIEVE IN AMERICA AND BELIEVE IF THEY LOST EVERYTHING THAT BEING IN AMERICA WOULD GIVE THEM A CHANCE TO REGAIN IT AND OUR FELLOW COUNTRY PEOPLE WHO WORE THE UNIFORM AND NOW LAY UNDER A DRAPING FLAG WHILE WE LIVE UNDER A WAVING FLAG. GOD BLESS AMERICA AND ALL OF THOSE WHO HAVE AND DO KEEP IT FREE TODAY. WILLIAM R. LOEHR wrloehr@aol.com

WORDS WRITTEN BY WILLIAM R. LOEHR AND ARE ON HIS FACEBOOK. THEY ARE THE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND THOUGHTS STRICTLY OF THE OWNER AND NOT TO BE USED WITHOUT PERMISSION. LOOKING FOR A MUSCIAN OR AGENT TO HANDLE THESE TWO VERSES. THEY WOULD GO GREAT WITH LEE'S MUSIC. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME, WILLIAM

God Bless America is one of the greatest songs of all time. Our rodeo club would play it before a rodeo performance.

I had the extreme pleasure of meeting Lee Greenwood at the French Lick Casino where he performed in concert two weeks ago. What a gentleman he is! We bought some Chantilly Lane Army Dolls with us and he autographed them for us. We sent one to Joe Anderson the VP of Chantilly who sings the song recorded on the doll. Lee was joking with us asking, "How many of these dolls did you bring with you?" It was an extreme honor and pleasure to meet him. He's a gentleman's gentleman. I wish him and his family much success. He's the heart and soul of America.

I remember he mentioned once before he wrote it after the Korean airliner incident in which some Americans lost their lives.
