Chely Wright Defends Revealing Brad Paisley Relationship Secrets

Chely WrightChely Wright knew when she released her tell-all book, 'Like Me: Confessions of a Heartland Country Singer,' last month she would endure a lot of criticism for coming out publicly as a lesbian. But she was unprepared for the backlash she faced regarding her admission of a relationship with Brad Paisley, while at the same time she was in an on-again, off-again relationship with another woman.

"I think there's a difference in a lot of the coverage being about Brad, versus Brad being a 'big part' of this book," she tells CMT. "I don't really think Brad is a big part of this book, but I do think there has been a lot of coverage about him being in this book. Brad is mentioned in two chapters. That's a fact. In my opinion, I obviously had to write about Brad because I couldn't call him 'Josh.' I couldn't call him 'Josh Brown' or 'Josh Sampson' in this book. It was widely known in public that Brad and I had a relationship."

Saying in 'Like Me' that she still mourns the fact that she knows Brad was hurt in the relationship, she acknowledges that he was only one casualty in her attempt to hide her homosexuality. "I wanted to make certain that everyone understood that when a person like me hides, they not only wreak havoc on themselves, but they damage other people around them," she says. "At that time, I caused incredible hurt and pain to Brad. I regret it very much. It's one of the great regrets of my life, and I needed to write that down. More than anything, I wanted to make certain that people knew he was not aware."

Talking openly about her journey before millions of people, thanks to her appearances on 'Oprah,' 'Today' and 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show,' among others, Chely says she did the media rounds for one purpose. "It's widely believed among a lot of people that listen to country music that 'gay' is something that only happens in San Francisco, New York and L.A.," she says. "But there are gays in Bakersfield, there are gays in Schenectady, there are gays in Tallahassee, there are gays everywhere. There's not a lot of talk about gay anything on country radio stations ... Now I hope the conversation and the dialogue can continue in an intelligent fashion."

Staying until midnight at a recent book signing in Nashville, listening to fans tell their stories, plus receiving more than 50 confessional letters from fans that night, not to mention the thousands she has already received, Chely says it's those moments that remind her why she decided to come out. "If I can be someone that they can say, 'Hey, she's like me,' that was my mission."

Planning on hitting the road this fall, Chely will first support several gay pride events, including appearances in Washington, D.C., Lansing, Mich. and Chicago. She will also make her first Nashville appearance as an openly gay country singer, when she hosts her tenth annual 'Reading, Writing & Rhythm' event tomorrow night (June 8), that will also include performances by Jamey Johnson, Trisha Yearwood, Bucky Covington, SHeDAISY, Rodney Crowell, Bucky Covington and Justin Moore.

I wish she'd just stop making this about him! I know these reporters keep bringing it up but the only reason they do is because she keeps saying that he's still mourning over their break-up or whatever. Oh I'm sorry I just thought when he got married and had two kids and has written songs like Little Moments, She's Everything, The World, Then , and Anything Like Me, that that would count as moving on but I guess I was wrong.

It appears she's multi-orgasmic; and man, has she been getting off on this subject! *LOL*

Why can't singers just sing and actors just act. I don't care about their personal issues anymore than they would care about mine. When the "famous" start spilling their garbage...I tune out. It seems to me... spilling your garbage is a desperate attempt for attention. No thanks....I just want to hear good music.

Sorry, there are moral absolutes just as firm as the laws of physics. We all will give account of ourselves to God, including keeping the truth from a world that is desperate for it. It has nothing to do with "hating," in fact, apathy, like "Who cares?" is far more damning than so called "hating." As for judging, if no one has a right to judge anyone, why are you judging Christians? Do you vote? You are judging! The biblical point is not to judge as a hypocrite, while you are doing the same thing that you condemn.

Too bad for y'all. This is one great CD. If you read the book, you would understand why she wrote it. The information that she shared concerning her romance with Brad Paisely was not included for saliciousiness, but rather to understand the pain she felt for loving someone, but not being able to be in love, no matter how hard she tried.

Goodbye Chely.... I have a feeling you are on your way out just like the Chicks. I think what you have done is disgusting, dragging others into your "coming out". Seems to me if you really cared about hurt feelings you would not be causing more. Shame on you !

Maybe so but at least Chely and the Chicks have the balls to stand up for what they believe whether others agree or not. So many in Country music are so afraid to speak their mind about anything because they are afraid of what the small minded might think. It's ok for Toby Keith to say what he wants and not have blacklash but then again he is among the ignorant and small minded!

Why do homosexuals always say they "have to" hide what they are? There are people like Barry Manalow who keep a private life as did Sandra Bullock. Who knew she dated or even married the tattoo guy? And then they justify hurting people because they "had" to. It's such a selfish lifestyle to begin with, with demands that we "feel their pain" as if heterosexuals don't grow up with the same insecure people calling them names. If you're not doing anything wrong, what does it matter what people think?

Because look what happened with Lance Bass, he hide it for years until the media got hold of it and threatened to out him in a very uncaring way. So he came out to his family and the world to save his family any hurt that the media would cause. There is definitely a double standard in the entertainment field when it comes to the private lives of heterosexuals and homosexuals.

Chely's new album is full of some amazing songs. Lyrically its pure pleasure. Its a different Chely. Personally I have always enjoyed her music, but this time around its better. More emotional, more real, more raw.

If you want to go down the road of Chely's relationship with Brad being very public, ok. However, the details about her crying in bed after they had sex is so completely unncessary. She could have said so much less and conveyed the same sentiment.
