'American Idol' Finalist Casey James Considers Country Career

Casey JamesCasey James already has a fan base totaling in the millions, thanks to placing third on the latest season of 'American Idol.' And now a move to Music City is sure to expand that fan base to the country world.

"Country music is a big wide open space for you to do what you want to do if you're within a certain realm," he tells Yahoo. "That will allow me to do what I want to do, if I go to Nashville. They are going to let me play the guitar, they're going to let me be edgy and rocky and a little bit bluesy, a little bit old school, a little bit new school. And my country roots -- I was born and raised listening to Merle Haggard and George Jones -- all of that wrapped up into one big ball is who I am musically, and I'm not going to be able to do that anywhere else. So that's what I'm hoping for."

Casey would not be alone in using 'Idol' as a launching pad for a career in country music. Carrie Underwood, Kellie Pickler, Danny Gokey, Josh Gracin, Bucky Covington and Phil Stacey all appeared on the hit TV show before beginning their careers. Fellow Season 9 contestant Aaron Kelly also says he hopes to establish himself as a country act, thanks in part to being inspired by his favorite group -- and frequent 'AI' guests -- Rascal Flatts.

Casey can be found this summer on the American Idols Live tour. Click here for dates.

I do believe Casey has said more than once that he is a Blues Musician. Therefore.....knowing exactly who he is as an artist!!! But there is no real record label recording 'just' blues anymore! So, since he is so versatile in his music, it's only right that he would consider very strongly about going into country. that is the genre that will embrace him the most, I think. They will allow the real Casey James to shine!! He is the whole package, no doubt about that, and whoever he signs with are going to be very happy people in a year or two!! I can see Casey being as big as say.....the male Taylor Swift!!! And don't grumble....mark my word....he is about to take country music by storm!!!

I'm not a hater but, this is hardly a surprise. In my opinion, many of Casey's "Idol" performances, already sounded like country. I never bought into the rocker persona. It takes more to be a rockstar, than just being a talented guitarist, which he obviously is. Maybe, he could have gone even further on "Idol", if he had established a firm identity for himself by "going country" even earlier. He will do extremely well in the country genre, as it is who, he is, and where he belongs.

Casey definitely sounds like a young man with a plan. I wish him well.

Casey should stick to what he does best. Unfortunately, I am not sure what that is because Casey is not sure. He does have the chops to play guitar with the best of them. He's more Stevie Ray Vaughn then Rascal Flatts. Whichever way you go Casey just try not to be too influenced by 19 Entertainment (is that what they are called?) All of their musicians have that same feel and sound. They took a great Dave Cook and made him sound like every other "Idol" managed contestant. All the ones that made a record (CD) under their management and guidance.

The guy will be nothing more then another in a long line of pre-fab country singers. So much of Nashville now days is based on looks and potential marketability and not necessarily on talent. It is really sad because Contemporary Country has become so cheap and de-valued.

I agree with you Reba. All the elements that make up Casey's musical style seem to fit into the Country label the best. The main thing I am concerned about is his management team. Casey is THE total package and I really do hope he will have the people around him that will properly manage and promote him while letting him be himself. He truly loves music, not fame and fortune. Music has been his life for the past several years and it's all he wants to do. His dedication and pure love of music is quite refreshing in this fame hungry time. I want him to be able to stay true to himself and to his roots. Keeping it real will work for him because he's a true honest to goodness musician who doesn't need any bells and whistles.
For anyone who hasn't seen his homecoming videos on YouTube, you must watch them!! The "sound bytes" we saw on AI every Tuesday night pale in comparison to his performances during his home town visit. Especially the ones at Key's Lounge. These performances prove Casey was born to do music. He puts his heart and soul into every song. It's beautiful to listen to and watch an artist who FEELS the music as he plays and sings it. Casey is one with his guitar when he's performing, it truly is an awesome sight to see him play the blues.

Casey is a wonderful and talented singer, songwriter, and musician - some of his original music has such a country edge to it - I'm a huge country music fan - Casey has just enough country - bluegrass - blues - rock -gospel and soul to make quite a splash in the industry - my sincere hope is he gets a good label to back him and a kick butt management team to promote him - as long as he stays connected to his Texas roots and keeps reaching out to his fans like he has both during and after the show - the sky is his limit - Country artists respect their fans and in return we're a loyal and dedicated bunch. I have my tickets to see Casey next month in Baltimore at the same arena I saw George Straight, Reba and Lee Ann this January - everything about that thrills me.
