Last December, when Jimmy Wayne was adjusting his thermostat in his Nashville home, he envisioned doing something on a grand scale to give back to those unable to stay warm so easily. Just a few days later, Jimmy announced he would be embarking on a 1,700-mile trek from Nashville, Tenn. to Phoenix, Ariz. -- on foot -- to raise awareness for at risk teens who age out of the foster care system and become homeless. Project Meet Me Halfway is nearing the end as Jimmy is now just about 60 miles shy of the Arizona border.Throughout his journey, he has accomplished many feats that left some wondering if he knew the impact Meet Me Halfway would have, including standing before the California and Washington, D.C. Senates. "Absolutely," Jimmy tells The Boot. "All you've got to do is dream stuff into existence. You can't not dream and think that something's going to happen. There's no way. If you don't believe in something and you don't envision it, who's going to do it for you? No one is. Your dreams are waiting on you to make the move."
Jimmy says he has another dream as to where he would like to take his campaign. "I envision that someday I'm going to have the chance to sit down and talk to the President of the United States," Jimmy says. "I believe that he's going to hear me. Obama is a President who comes from a single parent. He relates to everybody. He's a country song. That's what he reminds me of. He started networking and politicking in barber shops and small places. He did it the old fashion way. That's why he had so many people vote for him. I learned a lot by watching that on TV. I thought, 'you know what? That's what I'm going to do with project Meet Me Halfway.' You can't get more grass roots than walking halfway across America, meeting people on back roads ... going to their house and talking to them about it. Some of these people don't even have internet. I mean, you're going in their house! So you build from there. You build your foundation from that grass roots."
Once he completes this portion of his walk, Jimmy plans to keep Meet Me Halfway going strong by building his own foundation. He also plans to walk through one state every January to continue raising the much needed awareness for a cause close to his heart.
