The Band Perry, 'If I Die Young' - Story Behind the Lyrics

The Boot talks to Kimberly Perry of The Band Perry about their latest hit, 'If I Die Young,' which she wrote for their upcoming debut album, in stores October 5.

'If I Die Young' is actually the first song that we had penned for the album. It defines an early chapter of our music career. We penned it on a cloudy day in East Tennessee, which is where we live and do all of our best thinking. We wanted to write a song about making the most of whatever time you're given -- whether it's two years, twenty years or two hundred.

We really have gotten to live and love at our young ages. 'If I Die Young,' for us, is about if it all ends at this moment, look at what we've gotten to do. Whatever time we're given will be absolutely enough as long as we make the most of it.

It's been really cool on all of our Facebook pages. We've had people writing in and telling us about what this song means to them. People are finding a lot of life through this song. That's the spirit that we wrote it out of. That makes us so excited.

I love this song, especially the video. In college I took English Lit, and we were required to read Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem "The Lady of Shallot." Obviously, this video (if not the song) was inspired by this poem. (Kimberly Perry is even holding a book of Tennyson's poetry while she is lying in the boat.) It's one of my most favorite poems. It's from a Tennyson collection called "The Idylls of the King," which re-tells the story of King Arthur, Camelot, and the Knights of the Round Table. The Lady of Shallot had the "sharp knife of a short life" after fell in love with the Red Cross knight Sir Lancelot. She died from a broken heart, and before she dies she gets into a boat and drifts down a river to "many-towered Camelot." This video is dramatizing the poem "The Lady of Shallot."

This song I had played at my sister Tammy's funeral...she passed 17th of July 2011 from lung cancer she was only 43,on the 2nd of august her first granddaughter Launa Rain was born...she never got to see or ever hold her..so yeah so was taken way to early..we miss her so much..your song helps me to heal inside..Thank you so much for your beautiful song...With Love...Annette C.

I love the song "If I Die Young", but the meaning to me is even more solomn because it makes me think about all the young children that have been abducted, assaulted and murdered. On the other hand my "hubby" (engaged since 2005) thinks it's childhood suicide and doesn't like the words but loves the tune. .... ballad of the Dolls??
