"I started writing and thinking about the second record from the second I cut the first one," Josh tells The Boot. "I think you have to keep your mind on it and where it's going to go. I have to beat the first record. That's kind of a challenge, but it's a fun challenge. So I'm just trying to write and kind of put a plan together in my head."
Luckily for Josh, he has established some solid writing relationships with some of Nashville's top tunesmiths. On 'Way Out Here,' Josh co-wrote songs with Dallas Davidson (Joe Nichols' 'Gimmie That Girl,' Billy Currington's 'That's How Country Boys Roll,' Luke Bryan's 'Rain Is a Good Thing'), Casey Beathard (Kenny Chesney's 'No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problems,' Tracy Lawrence's 'Find Out Who Your Friends Are'), as well as accomplished singer-songwriters David Lee Murphy, George Ducas and Rhett Akins, which Josh says he considers an honor.
"Growing up, I was a big Rhett Akins fan," Josh says. "When somebody said I'd be writing with Rhett, it was one of those moments where I was like, 'Holy crap! I'm actually writing with a dude [whose music] I used to drink beer to!' It's weird ... when you move to town, you don't know anybody. Then a few years later you're writing with somebody like Rhett. That's huge!"
Josh's current single, 'Way Out Here,' is quickly approaching the Top 20 on the country chart. This summer, he's on the road with Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker, Justin Moore, Steel Magnolia and Easton Corbin on the H2O tour.
