Sporting a walking boot, Jimmy braved severe pain to walk the last five miles of the 1,700-mile trek he started on New Year's Day out of Nashville, Tenn. "I really can't believe I did it," he told The Boot, standing underneath the Welcome to Phoenix street sign. "I just finished my walk! It's really going to take some time to filter what happened. It's almost surreal. It's been seven months ... I've raised the bar so high, chances are I will never be able to match that. That was seven months of walking across America. It's pretty emotional."
The goal of project Meet Me Halfway was to raise awareness and funds for at-risk teenagers who age out of the foster care system. Once homeless himself as a teen, Jimmy knows firsthand the hardships of living on the streets. The singer says those memories and emotions really hit him hard during the final stretch into Phoenix.
"I started thinking about the Costner family who took me in [when I was homeless]. That was the first thing that came to mind," Jimmy says. "That is why I'm doing this thing. I was thinking about all those [homeless] kids out there that I'm doing this for. What saddens me is it's just a small dent in what needs to be done. I just felt like I needed to do my part."
Sunday morning, broken foot and all, Jimmy and his faithful followers celebrated his accomplishment by walking the final two miles into HomeBase Youth Services in Phoenix, where a gathering took place to honor Jimmy's incredible mission.
Jimmy plans to continue project Meet Me Halfway by walking through every state over a period of time and spreading the message to anyone who will listen.
