Kristy Lee Cook Reality Show a Real Headache for Jake Owen

jpistudios.com/Getty Images

She was booted from 'American Idol' and lost her record deal, but Kristy Lee Cook is not one to be deterred. The tenacious singer is launching a new reality series, 'Goin' Country,' based on her love of music, horses and, perhaps a little more surprisingly, hunting.

"I know a lot of people who watch hunting shows and they get kind of bored with ... the same old thing, in the stand doing this and that," Kristy Lee says (quote via Chicago Press Release) of the show, which airs on the Versus TV network. "So we tried to make it a little more real life with my music life in Nashville, trying to make it as a singer, and my life at home with the horses and barrel racing and my foundation for rescuing horses, and then hunting as well."

Not wanting the show to focus solely on her life, though, Kristy is bringing along some of her celebrity friends for a few of the episodes. Aaron Tippin takes her turkey hunting on his farm outside Nashville, while fellow 'Idol' cast-off Blake Lewis takes her deer hunting in Texas. But it's former labelmate Jake Owen who had perhaps the most memorable experience filming for the show, when he accidentally split his forehead open while sighting in his rifle on a hunt for exotic deer in Missouri with his twin brother Jarrod and Kristy Lee. The macho singer quickly sealed the cut with super glue and continued filming, and has nothing but praise for Kristy Lee, both on and off camera.

"It's pretty wild," Jake says. "She's just like one of the guys, really. She gets out there, whether she's killing deer, riding a four-wheeler or cleaning a deer. Every time I see her she's showing me a picture of some bear she shot out on her farm out in Oregon."

Just because she is spending time in front of the camera doesn't mean Kristy Lee has abandoned her dreams of standing behind a microphone someday. In addition to taping episodes for the show, she is also actively pursuing another record deal, with the help of good friend and writing partner Dean Sams from Lonestar. "I know it [a record deal] will happen," she insists. "It's just a matter of time."

I have done time as "They Prey", and nothing is better than the lean meat from a nice Elk. Only a select few cut open animals while they are alive. But again, they kill young kids while they are alive as well. Of course you most likely support that.

Hunting provides food, it is great to be in the outdoors, and the thought of providing your own meet with a nice buck is a rush. Maybe your rush is smoking weed. (Isn't that killing plants?)

The food Kristy gets feeds orphans. What have you done for someone besides yourself. Hunting provides over half a million jobs in a country that is on the brink of collapse. When it does fall, you will be calling Kristy to feed your lazy butts.

Thank you for this, Amie. The whole time reading through this I've just been getting increasingly more upset at the assumption of other's arguments that the people protesting this eat meat in the first place. Sorry that people are voting the sane comments down. But I appreciate your speaking up, so thanks.

Seriously, some times they don't even completely kill the animal before cutting into it. How humane is that. Not to mention wild animals are leaner and healthier than our beloved cow!

I agree with gsisbubba and Lorraine.. People just piss me off b'z they get on here and start ranted and raving about other people hunting but yet they still eat meat. HELLO!!!! Jackass guess where your meat comes from... My husband and I both hunt.. We both hunt for food, not just to go out there nd kill something just to have fun... and just because she rescues horses doesnt mean that she can't hunt. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats so does that mean that I shouldn't hunt either... You should never judge a book by the cover... Get over it...

Well said! These people should go to the slaughterhouses where they get their meat if they are so opposed to hunting. When you see how they treat/keep/and kill your cattle, chickens, and pig, you let me know how you still feel about hunting. The animal gets a free life, no hormone injections, no cages, no overload of antibiotics. Game meat is much healthier to eat than any of the livestock we raise in this country. Our farms treat animals more poorly than any hunter. Not to mention, we hunt to keep the populations under control. Deer are especially bad about overpopulating. Because humans have destroyed a lot of habitat for deer and their predators, deer would eat themselves and every other animal into starvation. Now I love animals and I'm soft-hearted so I don't hunt the animals myself but I'm not a hypocrit and I understand the benefit and need for hunting.

If you're not going to listen to the music of an artist who hunts for sport, you'd better not be planning on much country music in your life!

You guys are all a bucnh of ignorant fools. We, humans, are at the top of the food chain. We need to hunt responsibly in order to keep the balance in order. If you think deer, turkey, etc are too warm and fuzzy to shoot fine. But before you judge me and others go to a slaughter house and see how your poterhouse finds it's way to your table. At least we have the respect for the animal to do it ourselves. End of my rant, bring on the bashing.

Only the lowest IQ'd inhuman jerks get a kick out of hunting and killing animals. All of you....you need to do a little time as 'the prey' and learn something about empathy. Until you do....you're all a**holes. Including kristey lei cook.

I completely adhere to Amie's comment; I used to like her as a singer; I could not bear to listen to her voice now knowing she enjoys killing animals for sport.
