Lee Brice Remembers His First Time

Curb Records

Lee Brice is on a hot streak these days. His single 'Love Like Crazy' continues to climb the country charts, and his reputation for writing hits has not gone unnoticed. He's penned songs for several artists including Tim McGraw ('Still') and Garth Brooks ('More Than a Memory'), and has a catalog of over 300 compositions, making his choice to leave Clemson University to take his chances in Music City a no-brainer.

That hot streak he's on is certainly fitting, when you consider where Lee was as he learned his career was beginning to bubble with his first single at radio.

"I was in a hot tub about two in the morning, because I knew it was going to be coming out at some point, and we were just out celebrating," Lee tells The Boot. "I happened to be at home in a hot tub. I had a couple of my friends with me ... my girlfriend at the time, and another couple, we were just hanging out. It was on a tiny little radio outside. I just couldn't believe my ears, and to this day I can't believe my ears when I hear my songs on the radio. The song was 'She Ain't Right' in 2007. That was my first single as an artist.

"My friends and I just had a ball. We had a drink on the house. (laughs) We were just sitting there looking up at the sky and saying how we couldn't believe what was going on. I took it all in."

Coincidentally, the first time Lee heard the first song he co-wrote for someone else ('More Than a Memory'), he was also in water, drink in hand, and ready to celebrate.

"I was in Kansas City," says Lee of hearing his Garth song for the first time. "I had done a show the night before, and they told me the song would be coming out the next day. The DJ called me, and said, 'All right, turn your radio on, here we go,' and they started playing 'More Than a Memory' every hour on the hour that day. I was in the pool drinking a margarita. [laughs] That was amazing! My manager and a lot of people were there celebrating with me. It was a really cool day."
