In 2004, he had a vision of opening the Darryl Worley Cancer Treatment Center, and now that vision has become a reality through numerous fundraising efforts. Originally scheduled to open in early 2011, the center, which broke ground in March, will celebrate its grand opening November 3 at the Hardin Medical Center in Savannah, Tenn., and cancer patients will now be able to receive radiation and chemotherapy in West Tennessee, without having to make the long drives to major metropolitan areas.
"It's one of my greatest passions to see that thing up and running and making a difference in people's lives, especially those people down there that I have watched suffer because it's an economically-challenged area," Darryl recently told The Boot. "I believe the advancements we're making with the medicine now, with different types of treatment, we won't just make life easier and prolong life, I think there will be a time that we'll save lives there."
The Foundation and representatives of Hardin Medical Center and Hardin County Community and Healthcare Foundation have worked tirelessly to raise enough money to meet their $2 million goal for the project. Together, they have collected $1.7 million and hope to be debt-free by the time of completion.
"The generosity of all the donors from around the country and the Savannah area has been amazing," the singer says. "I think it's very surreal that this has happened so fast and just confirms that we are doing God's work. This is a defining moment in my lifetime and career."
Prior to the grand opening, Darryl has a few shows on the books, including one in Cheyenne, Wyo., October 28. For a list of more Darryl Worley tour dates, click here.
