Top Country Albums of 2010

2010 was an extraordinary year for country music, as seasoned performers reinvented themselves in ways we never thought possible and previously untapped talent exploded onto the scene. After hours of debating, The Boot presents our top 10 country albums of 2010 -- not just the biggest sellers or radio pleasers but the albums that we believe made the biggest mark on this first year of the decade.

Josh Turner, 'Haywire'
Standout Song: 'Let's Find a Church'
Country's perfect gentleman reminds every woman what type of man she should be looking for with songs like 'As Fast as I Could,' 'I'll Be There' and 'Your Smile.' And, honestly, who can keep from grooving to the four-week No. 1, 'Why Don't We Just Dance'?

Blake Shelton, 'All About Tonight'
Standout Song: 'Draggin' the River' (With Miranda Lambert)
It may only include six songs, but Blake's latest CD proves that quality outshines quantity. The EP covers the spectrum with 'Who Are You When I'm Not Looking,' which the Oklahoma native refers to as "the perfect pickup line," to the unorthodox love-story duet with his fiancée, Miranda Lambert, 'Draggin' the River,' to his rowdy party song 'All About Tonight.'

Jerrod Niemann, 'Judge Jerrod and the Hung Jury'
Standout Song: 'Old School New Again'
A true labor of love, Jerrod Niemann recorded this album on his own, without a label affiliation, and filled it with heartfelt songs and light-hearted vignettes. The record covers all the facets of the charming Kansas native's personality, from the good-timing 'One More Drinkin' Song' to the lovers' lament of 'What Do You Want.'

The Band Perry, 'The Band Perry'
Standout Song: 'Walk Me Down the Middle'
You take Kimberly Perry's fairytale, poetic writing skills, combine them with her sweet voice and pair her with her brothers Reid and Neil, and you get a Band Perry album that uses mountain sound to transport listeners to everywhere from Paris to their local county fair. Whimsical tunes such as 'All Your Life' and the haunting 'If I Die Young' fit perfectly with the confident kiss-off tune, 'Quittin' You,' and the defiant 'You Lie.'

Jamey Johnson, 'The Guitar Song'
Standout Song: 'That's Why I Write Songs'
We didn't need 25 tracks to tell us how great a songwriter Jamey Johnson is, but you also won't hear us complain about the variety and richness in each song. From the Merle Haggard-esque 'Can't Cash My Checks' to the high-life-denouncing 'Playing the Part,' and soul-baring, mostly spoken 'That's Why I Write Songs,' Jamey stays true to his lower Alabama country roots.

Lady Antebellum, 'Need You Now'
Standout Song: 'Hello World'
'Need You Now' catapulted the already triumphant trio into superstardom, making Lady Antebellum the biggest-selling band of the year -- in any genre. Four straight No. 1 singles with 'Need You Now' (which also won the CMA and ACM Single of the Year trophies), 'Our Kind of Love,' 'Hello World' and 'American Honey' are more than ample proof of the group's mass appeal.

Darius Rucker, 'Charleston, SC 1966'
Standout Song: 'In a Big Way'
Taking inspiration from Radney Foster's 'Del Rio, Texas 1957,' Darius named his sophomore country release after his own birthplace and year. Whether it's the humorous break from life, 'I Don't Care,' featuring Brad Paisley, or the family-centered, count-your-blessings 'This,' Darius shows off his songwriting mastery and dedication to the format.

Zac Brown Band, 'You Get What You Give'
Standout Song: 'Colder Weather'
The Zac Brown Band's second album covers everything from road tunes to beach jams and even a love song or two. There's the melancholy, piano-driven 'Colder Weather,' the reggae-infused 'Who Knows,' the harmony-filled 'As She's Walking Away,' and the upbeat, optimistic 'Knee Deep,' to make this one of the most eclectic projects of the year.

Taylor Swift, 'Speak Now'
Standout Song: 'Never Grow Up'
Yes, she sold a million copies in the CD's first week and broke the record for best first week since 50 Cent's 2005 album, but Taylor also happened to make a really good album, filled with songs she wrote all by herself. She fantasies about breaking up a wedding in 'Speak Now,' calls out past adversaries in 'Mean' and recognizes new loves with the chemistry-driven 'Enchanted.'

01
Dierks Bentley, 'Up on the Ridge'
Standout Song: 'Fallin' for You'
A bluegrass-inspired album may have been the last thing folks expected Dierks to release this year, but he's more than shown us all how needed it was. Classic country themes come through in songs such as the straightforward 'You're Dead to Me,' the good-versus-evil battle in 'Bad Angel,' the redemptive 'Draw Me a Map' and the good ole drinking song 'Bottle to the Bottom.'

Carrie is over rated. Her first CD was good because she had a lot of help from FOX. Now she is on her own it just gets worse and worse. Can't wait for her to start making Canadian kids and stay home.

I disagree with some of the choices here though, besides the one song "Lover, Lover" which is fantastic, I thought that Jerrod Niemann's debut albums was kind of a joke, with more comedic "skit" tracks, than actual songs. To replace this on the list, I personally would have put Little Big Town's latest album (released on August 24th, 2010)"The Reason Why." It is an INCREDIBLE album from start to finish and the group is extremely talented and has a truly unique sound, that never seems to get the recognition it really deserves. They have been working as a group for like 12 years now, and ALL of their albums prove what special, raw, natural talent they all have when it comes to melodies and harmonies. They REALLY deserved to be on this list, more than I can even begin to say.

As much as I agree, and happen to LOVE both Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert, both of their albums, "Play On", and "Revolution," respectively, came out in the year 2009, not 2010. So, since they came out at the end of 2009, they are not eligible for THIS list, but it does not, in any way, mean they are not extraordinary albums. I own both and love both of those CDs.

Again, Carrie Underwood's PLAY ON is missing from the list?? Why do the critics snub her each year - Carrie co-wrote 3 #1 singles, sold 1.8M copies, etc. PLAY ON is the best produced, sung, complex, and timeless cd on the year (besides Lady A and Jason Aldean's cds). Why would anyone think SPEAK NOW should be #2 when its not even country, its tween pop marketed to little girls, with vapid lyrics and the same beat/meloday used over and over. Why is everyone fooled by her so=called songwriting talents? Carrie's TEMPORARY HOME. MAMA'S SONG, OR CASANOVA COWBOY blows anything on SPEAK NOW except maybe MINE. I am sick and tired of CU not getting credit for being the best in the business. She couldn't have had a better year yet Miranda and Taylor get all the accolades off their average output. Lastly, for those who think Carrie cannot sing country take a listen to the best pure country track of the year..."You're Looking At Country" from L Lynn tribute cd, proving Carrie can sing above anyone in country if she wants. thanks

Pretty decent list-was glad to see Blake Shelton on there along with Jamey Johnson and Dierks Bentley-bout time Blake & Dierks got some recognition and Jamey is just amazing. Couple were missing tho-wonder when Gary Allan is going to get the recognition he so deserves-very talented songwriter/singer; and my own personal favorite: Kid Rock. Born Free is excellent and the title track is for our Troops-disappointed in the lack of acknowlegement of that! But Kid Rock isn't in it for the awards anyhow and we his fans know it. Keeo On Rockin' Kid and we'll be rockin' right along with you:)

The Country Music genre has released up some great Country Music for 2010. I have purchased more Country Music this year than I have in the past 3 to 4 years put together. Enjoyed collecting the following artist and I hope they continue to bring more music.

Merle Haggard I AM WHAT I AM
Gretchen Wilson I GOT YOUR COUNTRY RIGHT HERE
Tribute to Loretta Lynn TRIBUTE
Marty Stuart GHOST TOWN
Roseanne Cash THE LIST
Randy Houser CADILLAC
James Otto SHAKE WHAT GOD GAVE YA
Toby Keith BULLETS IN A GUN
Country Tribute to Lynard Skynard TRIBUTE

A few months ago, I have truly had the pleasure of adding Jamie Johnson “The Guitar Song” as some of the greatest work offered in 2010. The Guitar Song offers up traditional classic country roots, bringing the interlinked musical arrangement of bluesy sounds, full of impressive written lyrics combined with complimentary vocals. Jamey has an incredible bunch of talented musicians who exhibit Oh- the quality of Jamey’s ART. This man knows exactly how to make music at its very best. The Guitar Song is and should be Album of the year and highly represents the lasting long-time genre of Country Music. I wish this artist the very best of any upcoming recognitions that are genuinely earned.

Taylor Swift is horrible, only 13 year olds like her and that is debate able. All of the DJ's that say they like her are just following a trend. She will not be popular when people get their hearing back!!!!! Listening to her is like scraping your fingernails over a black board....

Bet you never actually listened to the album, Sue. She's going to be around for a long, long time, so get used to her. Best songwriter of her generation, and the youngest ever honored by the Songwriters Hall of Fame. I wonder why all those people worldwide keep buying her albums anyway? Gosh.
