Danny Gokey to Open Sophia's Heart Facility in Nashville

Vernell Hackett

Danny Gokey could hardly contain his excitement as he took guests on a whirlwind tour of the new Sophia's Heart facility in Nashville on Tuesday (February 2). The 77,000-square foot building will be the base for his Compassion Nashville project.

"We just put our first homeless family here this week," Danny told The Boot. "Our goal is to not just provide them housing but give them programs that help them to return as a viable part of the community."

Among the programs for adults that Sophia's Heart will offer are GED tutoring and life skills, including financial training and how to approach finding a job. The facility will also offer a variety of after-school music and arts programs for children from the surrounding community, including contemporary dance, audio & video recording, engineering classes, fashion design and choir.

"Our vision at Sophia's Heart includes programs to house and restore the lives of the economically challenged and families that have been displaced from their homes due to unfortunate circumstances," the 'American Idol' alum explained as he walked through the numerous rooms that have already been earmarked as the dance studio, art and design center and studio area. "This might include children and families who have been touched by poverty, sickness, disease, broken families and broken dreams.

"We want to give people hope when they come to be here with us," Danny continued. "The most important thing we can do is restore their dream and give them hope for their future."

The facility has temporary housing for 40 families, and a kitchen that can prepare up to 300 meals a day. The design of the building allows it to wrap around a courtyard where adults can go to relax or children can play. There is room for the administration offices, as well as a recreation room for families to watch television and play. "I was in here the other day, and there were toys all over the floor and I loved it," Danny said with a huge smile as he showed off the room. "We still plan to add a coat of paint and make it brighter and more cheerful in here."

Danny says he loves the fact that part of the focus is on children. "There are 4,000 homeless people in Nashville, and 2,200 of them are kids," he says. "While they are staying here they will take part in all of the programs that we are offering to the children in the neighborhood. We want to have a beautiful facility for the people we help here."

Danny is not just the person spearheading Sophia's Heart; he's hands-on. The singer and a group of his friends have actually been working in the facility to get it ready for its February 21 opening, but there is still a lot of painting and caulking to be done.

"We were here stripping wallpaper and pulling down wallboard," he said proudly "There's a lot of work to be done here before we are open, but we have a lot of people who understand the dream and who are working to make it a reality."

Danny's peers may not be helping him paint and lay down flooring, but he will be calling on them once the facility is open.

"There are songwriters, musicians, producers and engineers who I know can come out and speak to the classes for the young people," he said. "I know in a city like Nashville, we will have so many people we can pull from to make these classes exciting and interesting for the kids."

The Sophia's Heart Nashville Choir has already been performing with Danny at various shows, and has an upcoming appearance scheduled with him on the Grand Ole Opry. This group of young people performed with the singer on Tuesday at the luncheon to showcase the new building.

Sophia's Heart Foundation was founded by Danny in honor of his wife, Sophia, who passed away in July of 2008 from complications from routine surgery for congenital heart disease. He founded the organization after receiving a life insurance check when Sophia died.

"I didn't want it, I thought they were trying to put a value on her life," he explained. "I was angry at the world and at God. So I tried to figure out what I could do with that money, which wasn't a lot, and I decided to start Sophia's Heart. My wife may have had problems with her heart, but she had the most beautiful heart you've ever seen."

Danny was the third place finalist on the eighth season (2008) of 'American Idol.' He auditioned for the show just four weeks after his wife died, and says that is one of the hardest things he had ever done. "She had encouraged me to audition and she was supportive of my music, so I felt that it was what she would have wanted me to do," Danny said. "Sophia's Heart honors her and her love and dedication to helping people."

I can't fathom how the work that Danny Gokey is doing for the children of Nashville and his also in his hometown of Milwaukee, WI could be fashioned into anything but a good thing.

While starting a music career is a daunting task, Danny has complicated his life by investing a lot of time, energy and heart into his charity Sophia's Heart.

Go Gokey!

Th first time I heard of Danny Gokey was when he did a short concert at a Best Buy store close to where I live. Had no idea who he was but hearing him live left me wanting to hear more of him. I'd say he is a good performer and engaged with the crowd. I like traditional country and his CD is the first contemporary country I've ever bought. That led me to warm up to other contemporary acts like Keith Urban.

Now, I like him more because of his cause. Didn't realize he has a foundation that helps less fortunate people. It's the people like him that makes this world a better place. I wish him success.

No, I am trying to 'spew' the fact that this country has forgotten that the public wants 'talent', not the life stories of all of their entertainers.

Sweetie you couldn't be more wrong. Went to see him in concert along with my husband. He was pretty impressed with his set. Hearing him perform live is something you have to experience. You have to open your mind just a little bit, you will hear just how great he sounds. Come on... just give him a chance to change your mind.

No one cares about anyone's "life story" as you put it. I don't see a homeless shelter as exploiting anyone. I do see it as helping families.

I love the guy's music- he is a great entertainer and a rising star.

Just found out about his foundation and I respect him even more.

What kind of a person goes out of their way to slant helping others in a negative light- you obviously have some sort of an agenda.

what we need are entertainers who entertain and get to that place to do so without always leaning on the memory of a late loved one or a disability, etc., in order to make it 'big'. Call it for what it is...Exploitation of, I am sure, someone who was a wonderful young woman. But without this connection, no one would remember or even care about Danny Gokey, as American Idol kept reminding us. Almost every week American Idol forced the knowledge of his late wife upon us, so that people would vote for Gokey. He is not the best singer, merely a mediocre one. Has talent now become, and the judgement of talent, inseparable from feeling sorry for someone or do we look at what someone does for others as a judgement of how big their talent is?
Talent is talent. Being a nice person is being a nice person. Idol is a talent show. It's not Extreme Home Makeovers.

You couldn't be more wrong.
Talent:
Number three on Idol.
Highest album debut in country music in 19 years.(To blame this on idol would infer that he had talent so I would be careful about going there.)
Two songs on that album top 40 hits. MBD's going to the top 10.
writing and recording his sophomore album as we speak.
Performed at the Grand Opry going on six times.
Has opened for Sugarland and Lady A.
Nice pedigree for someone with a mediocre voice and not talent.
All this success plus being a nice guy.
You simply can't argue with facts. Look them up.

I have decided that you are just looking for a platform to spew your hate and I'm not going for it. Done.......

Danny is the complete Pkg. He is a great entertainer with a wonderful voice that can sing any venue he wants and sound beautiful. He has the IT in his personality that draws people to him. He has a powerful connection with his fans and is electric on stage. (rer764 You should go see him in person, he will change your mind.) If that isn't enough he has a heart of gold. When he should (as some people claim) be solely focused on his career and getting ahead, he is instead helping flood victims, opening up homeless shelters, and providing safe havens and venue for children to learn Music and art. In keeping his wife name alive he is creating a meaningful legacy for her. How can this possibly be boring. Danny we need more like you in this world. Proud to call myself a fan.

yawn. I am so tired of hearing about Danny Gokey and his tributes to his late wife. This is why he failed at American Idol. It seems he is exploiting his late wife to get his own face and singing talents out and about. Shameful.

The only thing shameful is the unjustified and ugly hate that has been thrown at a wonderful human being. Time and Danny's behavior have proven this erroneous accusation wrong. What you wrote is a tiresome lie and a shame to you. Have you gone to a concert? Have you met this man? When you do come back and then have something to say. I might listen, remember if you want respect It's not the content, but the presentation. The comment above only makes you look bad. The wonderful thing about Danny is if you or yours needed help he would help you. Regardless. Think about it.
