The musician admits that if he had to pick an alternate profession, given his raising and his roots, there's one at which he'd feel right at home. "Raising chickens -- I mean, I can't imagine not doing music," Randy tells WYCD.com, "but if I couldn't, that would be it. C'mon now, I'm a Mississippi boy, you know that!"
Luckily, the singer/songwriter thing seems to be working out, so he probably won't be plucking feathers anytime soon. Randy is grateful for both sides of his career -- as artist and songwriter, but he considers himself a writer first and foremost.
"I'm a songwriter, that's where it starts," he says. "I love writing with someone that shares that same feeling of accomplishment. I'll play music for my fans as long as they'll listen, but I fancy myself as a writer first."
Randy may be long on talent but he's apparently a wee bit short on compassion when it comes to razzing his buddies in their time of crisis. During the same radio interview, Randy was asked about his pal Justin Moore's recent bus fire while on tour in Detroit, and whether or not he might have had anything to do with it. "Naw, I didn't start it," he cracked. "But I didn't try to put it out, neither!"
Randy has a brand-new song called 'In God's Time,' which deals with those things in life for which you ache so badly that sometimes aren't meant to be. It's a tune and a message that are deeply personal for him, which he feels he was given for a specific reason.
"I was in a place where all the things I thought would make me truly happy, I found could make me just as miserable," Randy tells The Boot of his inspiration for the song. "It was exactly what I needed to say at the time ... It was exactly what I'd been feeling, but it hadn't manifested itself yet. It was exactly what my heart needed to hear. A lot of times you have to verbally say things to soak 'em up."
