Josh Kelley Relishes 'Leave It to Beaver' Life in Utah

NI/X17online.com

Josh Kelley moved to Utah with his wife, actress Katherine Heigl, a few years ago, and even though he's a long way from Nashville and the songwriting community he loves, he's finding some advantages to living in such beautiful surroundings.

"I do a lot of skiing, and I'm obsessed with fly-fishing," Josh tells The Boot. "When the summer comes, you meet people out here who get you into different things. One of my buddies knew I loved fishing, but I'd never fly-fished, and he said, 'You gotta come with me!' So after my first cast and my first trout on the line, I was honestly just hooked. When I get into something, you can tell I really like something, because it's full-speed, head first. I dive right in and engulf my life in it."

Josh even takes his hobby on the road with him these days, and his tour mates occasionally get to benefit from his obsession. "I travel all around the country with my fly-tying kit, and I tie flies all the time and give them away. I gave Eric Church one of my hoppers the other day."

Of course, he's gotten Katherine "hooked" on the sport as well, but Josh finds himself smiling sometimes when he thinks about the vast contrast between their glamorous personal lives as celebrities and their home life with daughter Naleigh.

"Katie and I both caught trout one day fly-fishing," he recalls. "We came back and she prepared the fish, and I downloaded the movie 'A River Runs Through It,' and we watched it while we ate our trout. Sometimes I'm at home watching TV, and me and my wife are sitting watching a movie, and she'll be on one couch knitting, and I'll be on the other side tying flies, and I'm thinking to myself, 'This is so 'Leave It to Beaver,' man!'"

Josh admits that although they're enjoying their time out West, he definitely sees the family moving back to Nashville at some point in the future. But from a creative standpoint, living away from Music City has actually inspired him more as a writer.

"I'm in Nashville all the time," he notes. "What's funny is I write better songs in Nashville not being a resident. Just because I feel like I'm always really excited to come back and write with my friends. If I could write with them every day, I might get sick of it. I definitely don't take it for granted, because it really is basically the best place in the world to write songs."

Josh's album, 'Georgia Clay' is set for release March 22. Read our full interview with the singer/songwriter here.

I had the pleasure of doing a live, one-on-one interview with Josh Kelley in Kansas City several years ago for an emerging music site and I have to say he is unequivocally one of the most authentic, warm and gifted people, much less artists, I've ever met. He and his family deserve every happiness.

It sounds like domesticated life has suited her, and buffed her edges down a little bit. For a while she was getting so unpleasant and bitchy, I wasn't able to enjoy her work because my dislike for the "real" person was shining through. Good for her for finding a life of simple happiness. Maybe that warmth will come through in her professional work, too.

I feel sad for the people who put this lifestyle down without experiencing it.My family and I came out from Boston last year to Colorado you talk about the scenery, breathtaking our home life is similar although I don't knit. My only regret is I didn't do it 10yrs ago. Good Luck , just keep doing what makes you and your family happy.

We will see how awesome he thinks his relationship is when he reads about his wife banging some studly co-star on location. Yeah, hollywood people have great track records when it comes to marriage. What newleywed isnt happy in the beginning?

Before you bash me for saying this, please remember how wrong you think I am in two years.

How long, exactly, is one considered a "newlywed"? They've been married for 3 1/2 years.

As my mom always says: "That's why Baskin Robbins makes 31 flavors. I am glad that Josh and Katherine are happy in Utah. Unfortunately, I did not even know who either were until I read this article. Could someone tell me is she a television actress or movie actress or both. I am not familiar with him either. I am glad they are happy in Utah. I have never been, yet I would hate it. I am a city person. I love New York City. So different strokes for different folks. I think that person who wrote those awful things is terrible. Why does he care where they live? He says such hateful things for no reason. My thinking is everyone should do what makes them happy. I would rather go to a Broadway play than fly fishing. Also, the guy saying Josh is a "real man instead of a metro sexual." That comment is absurd. Just because he likes living in Utah and fly fishing doesn't make him "a real man." Our society will never move forward as long as we keep labeling everyone who doesn't fit the mold of their vision. His comment is probably what millions feel. A "real man" can live in New York and love movies and theater. I think the point of the article is they are happy not living in Hollywood or Nashville where one would expect them to. They aren't following a mold yet rather following their own bliss. People need to accept everyone as who they are and stop labeling everyone

FYI Yes, on both counts for Katherine: came to stardom on TV's hit drama/Grey's Anatomy; Movies: Acting since '92. Josh: musician/singer/songwriter and brother of Lady Antebellum's Charles Kelley. Lady A attributes much of their success to Josh and his support of them early in their career. Not exactly sure how you hadn't heard of either or both of these folks before but guess you have now~

Wow, jealous much? They live a real, quiet, normal life in Utah, and you give them sh** for not living in Hollyweird? Her career is just fine. Maybe being a happily married mom is more important to her than Hollywood parties. And this would be a bad thing, why? Admit it, you're just a jerk looking for excuses to be hateful. Given a choice, anyone would rather be her than be you, bitter jerk.

It is nice to see a georgeous girl like her marry a real man, not a plastic metro-sexual.

Dude enjoy Utah catch some "Browns, and Cut-Throats" and enjoy the life with your beutiful family. Don't be swayed by that Hollywood scene. You dont have to be "of" the world, You just have to live "in" the world. Blessings.
