Chely Wright Is Engaged!

Chely Wright is off the market! The country singer confirms to People magazine that she is engaged to Lauren Blitzer, a GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender) activist and co-author of 'Same Sex in the City (So Your Prince Charming Is Really a Cinderella),' a lighthearted self-help book for lesbians.

"They met through their youth advocacy work, and say that their passion for Scrabble holds them together," a rep for Chely tells People.

The two will be married August 20 in Connecticut, one of only five states in the U.S. with marriage rights for same-sex couples.

This engagement announcement comes less than a year after Chely came out publicly as a lesbian.

"There had never, ever been a country music artist who had acknowledged his or her homosexuality," she told People just after coming out. "I wasn't going to be the first ... But nothing in my life has been more magical than the moment I decided to come out."

The 40-year-old singer/songwriter says going public with her sexuality has been a rocky road, complete with bullying and taunting. But she's also had poignant moments of support -- and those are what stick with her most.

"I was nervous to come back," Chely told The Boot last summer at her Reading, Writing and Rhythm benefit in Nashville. "But the fans in country music have been incredible. Country music fans are loving and supportive. They know I love 'em, and as Minnie Pearl said, 'If you love 'em, they'll love you back. And boy, are they!"

Chely's coming out journey is being documented in a new film, 'Wish Me Away,' which will premiere at the Nashville Film Festival later this month. Something tells us this movie will have a happy ending.

Chely WRONG should not be promoting her immoral lifestyle. Thank goodness Country music has turned their backs on her. She'll fit in much better with the Pop crowd like Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Kanye West and others of that ilk.

Brenda,
Let me break down the concept for you: Chely is a human being. Her fiancee is a human being. They aren't blood related. Neither of them were raised by wolves. They are in love. And they want to get married. Gender norms are not something determined by legal sex; they are social constructs that we've gotten used to. As far as I'm concerned, human is human and love is love. I'd hate to think someone would read one sentence about you and yours and make a judgment about you. Luckily, you're not famous.

@CABQ: I hope you're talking to the above commenters who quoted the Bible as a vehicle to criticize Wright and her fiancee. I agree with you; it's never wrong to love but it's always wrong to hate.

Did you miss the part of the bible that teaches love, acceptance, and understanding? How about a little more kindness and a little less judgemental nastiness.

Please, please do not compare Chely to Charlie Sheen. He has admitted to being a drug user, alcohol abuser, and serial adulterer. All Chely has done is fall in love just like all of us hope to. She seems to be a lovely, kind, empathetic person--she is not immoral for falling in love. Leave her alone. Judge not lest ye be judged.

Not to mention the fact that she's not "rubbing it in your face" any more than Carrie was when she announced HER engagement. Chely, Carrie, and all of them are HUMAN FIRST. And at least they exhibit the civility of a human being, as do the writers of this article. I wish I could say the same for some of you.

So leme get this straight (no pun intended,) did anyone ever list "sexuality" as one of the reasons you ARE fan of Carrie Underwood or Brad Paisley? So (and bear with me as I use *gasp* LOGIC here,) why should "sexuality" suddenly be a reason why you AREN'T a fan of Chely Wright? Remind me what she ever did to you, first of all, and second, I don't think the fact that any country star is heterosexual is the REASON your kids who are straight are straight, so I can promise you that Chely has no more influence on your kids than those artists do. So, I ask you, what on EARTH are you so damn AFRAID of?

Sorry, gays can say they are engaged or have gotten married all they want. I don't care what state they go to, what country they go to. In the eyes of God they AREN'T! If you believe in Him and the Bible, which I do, THAT is the law. Not trying to be mean, ignorant or whatever else I'll be called, but that's the truth. I'm not against people and love, but it is what is. Please don't gang up on me, just putting this out there.

You cannot pick and choose what laws in the bible you want to quote, I believe, and love the bible, but with all this adultery and killing and no love for humanity, how can anyone say anything about this situation. Who can really cast the first stone at these two people.

What has happened to country music ? This girl is really stupid to think country fans are going to accept abberant behavior. This is most probably a Dixie Chicks type of desperate PR trick that is going to back fire on her like it did the chicks.
