Jennifer Nettles Is a Gay Man?

Jacquelyn Martin, AP

Sugarland have a knack for picking diverse covers -- everything from Beyoncé's 'Irreplaceable,' to the B-52's 'Love Shack' and the Bee Gees 'Stayin' Alive' -- for their live shows. These choices led a recent interviewer to come to the conclusion that Jennifer Nettles has a lot in common with gay men.

"Yes, absolutely!" Jennifer tells the South Florida Gay News with a laugh. "What's not to love about that? And you would definitely think that if you saw our current show, because we've been closing with 'Like a Prayer' by Madonna ... If people ask me, 'What are your musical tastes?' from now on I will say that of a gay man. [laughs]"

While that distinction would, of course, more or less make Jennifer the first "openly gay man" in country music, the singer fielded the more serious question of whether is it more difficult to be 'out' in the country-music format than others? "But isn't it scary for any artist to come out?" Jennifer reasons. "Even in mainstream pop it is. I mean, thank God -- and I've said this before -- for Adam Lambert. Thank God for eyeliner. I have needed a sexy man to wear eyeliner since the Cure. Since [Cure lead singer] Robert Smith, no one has really been able to do it for me in that way."

Jennifer, who is straight, does admit to a few girl crushes of her own. "There are so many wonderful women out there," she says. "As far as actresses go, I love Meryl Streep. Maybe this will continue the whole idea that I'm actually a gay man: I have this thing for British women. I love Judi Dench. I love Helen Mirren. I love these women, and I definitely do have big girl crushes on them. I'm trying to think as far as musicians go. I mean, what's not to love about Beyoncé?"

The stereotypical similarities don't stop there. "I would love to be on 'Glee,' thus furthering the myth that I'm a gay man," the singer admits with a laugh.

Acting is something the Georgia native would like to pursue, even beyond 'Glee.' "I actually love it," she says. "Theater is definitely something that, through the course of my childhood and even in college, I enjoyed participating in. I would love to do theater, or as far as movies or television goes, if the right thing came along I would definitely entertain it. Right now everything has been so focused on my music career, and obviously music is my first love, so I've been focused there. But if the right thing came along, absolutely! Obviously, I have a lot of fun in the videos. I would definitely be open to that."

I don't think it's appropriate that you added the line "Jennifer, who is straight..." First, Her sexual orientation is none of our business. She likes to keep her private life private. And second, I don't remember her ever clarifying that she was straight in this interview or others.

I'm a gay man. And an aspiring country artist. And Jennifer Nettles is an inspiration.

I'm not kidding.
