"The lead break in the song is a slide guitar part," Troy explains to The Boot. "When we were choosing guitars for that part, we tried a bunch that didn't work. I had recently made a guitar out of a cigar box and we ended up pulling this thing off the wall. It's made of Telecaster parts, a Dan Electro neck and a real cigar box. We plugged it in and it sounded great on the track and that's what people are hearing on the radio."
Necessity may be the mother of invention, but for Troy, it was simple boredom. "We had a two-week stretch in Nashville where it was cold and rainy and I didn't have anything to do, and I like to tinker in my garage," he says. "I'd seen one of these things online, on Youtube or something, so i decided to make one."
With touring dates coming up with artists ranging from Lady Antebellum to Toby Keith, Troy has no plans to return to the garage anytime soon, but The Boot couldn't resist asking him what materials he'd need to make his own piano. "I'd have to start with a big cardboard box," he said, not skipping a beat. "But that sounds a little more complicated than a guitar."
