Mindy McCready Sues Her Mother and National Enquirer

After battling drug addiction, criminal charges that resulted in two separate prison sentences, suicide attempts, media backlash following a rumored affair with married baseball star Roger Clemens and a sex tape that was widely circulated on the Internet, Mindy McCready has spent much of the past year trying to put her life back together, both for herself and her 5-year-old son, Zander. Staying mostly out of the spotlight, except for promoting her latest album, 'I'm Still Here,' the 35-year-old is back in the public eye, this time for suing both National Enquirer's publisher, American Media, Inc., and her mother, Gayle Inge, for an article the tabloid ran titled, 'Mindy McCready Doesn't Deserve to Have Child Back.'

The article, which cites Gayle as the only source, alleges Mindy has failed drugs tests and missed court appointments regarding custody of her son, whom she has only seen once in the last year. They are, according to the songstress, complete lies she is unable to ignore.

"What is shameful and heartbreaking is the unhealthy relationship I have endured with my mom over my lifetime," the singer says of her lawsuit. "With the help of friends and therapy, I have realized how detrimental the relationship has been for me and I've worked hard to detach. I've tried to keep my personal life from being public. But every time I take a positive step forward, make healthy, personal decisions and move forward in my career, it seems my mother uses it as an opportunity to step into the picture to deflate me ... to become the focal point ... to use the press to step into the spotlight-at my expense. In all honesty, I'm saddened it has come to this; but this is not a one-time, single event-to sell her 'stories' to the Star, the Globe and Radar Online. [Publications all under the American Media, Inc. umbrella.] It has just got to stop, for me and my son."

The Florida native has had several well-publicized arguments with her mother, who currently has custody of Zander, including having been charged with battery following a physical altercation between the two in 2007. But according to both Mindy and her attorney, Andrew Douglas, this latest incident will not be tolerated.

"The statements contained in the National Enquirer article [on or about June 8, 2011] are personal attacks intended to inflict hurt and pain on Ms. McCready at the expense of the truth," her lawyer states. "It is also unfortunate that the National Enquirer published this story without first corroborating Mrs. Inge's statements ... At this time, we have no choice but to address the defamation in a court of law to protect Ms. McCready's personal and professional interests."

The lawsuit, which seeks punitive damages, alleges the article the National Enquirer ran is "false and misleading and therefore defamatory" and "by strong implication attacks the morality and character of McCready by providing credibility to the unsubstantiated statements of Gayle Inge through American Media's failure to fact-check Gayle Inge's statements in any capacity whatsoever."

The 'Guys Do It All the Time' singer says she wants to set the record straight. "What I want people to know is how unfairly I've been treated -- because of my past mistakes and, quite frankly, because of my celebrity history," she insists. "My custody battle has been deplorable and fraudulent. And ... my mother's agenda, I believe, is to continue to keep my character and lifestyle 'questionable.' The focus needs to be about the safety and well-being of my son and not about untruthful statements that have lent to unjust results. Zander and I need to be together."

Mindy's desire to be back in the spotlight for the right reason -- her music -- instead of her ongoing troubles, is one she has been trying to convey since she appeared on 'Celebrity Rehab' in 2009 and began trying to rebuild her personal and professional life. "If you're going to love me, then love me for who I really am," she told The Boot. "If you're going to hate me, then hate me knowing all of the facts, and not because of some story you heard. I want people to not count me out and not pass judgment until they hear the real story and they really do know me."

The lawsuit was filed in Palm Beach County, Florida.

Well, maybe it's just me...but if you are going to say this chick ended up a mess from her upbringing apparently, why the hell is it good that those same people raise her kid? O.o

...just saying. : P

Hang in there Mindy. Just like every father isn't a dad, neither is every mother a mom.
Your problems with your mother are well documented. I know when a judge does listen to you, he'll have no trouble discerning that too. Peace and love!

Okay, say she is a trainwreck...why is she one, maybe she is because her mother sucked as a parent.

...do we really know?

Some people can bounce back from having a crappy childhood, others not so easily and some never do.

...maybe this one is trying.

Nevertheless...

If my upbringing and lack of emotional stability to rise above and beyond it, made me a trainwreck...the last friggin' person on the planet I would want my kid to be with is the same person/people that screwed me up so righteously. >.<

Yeah, right Mindy.. ALWAYS blame your MOTHER for your bad choices in life. The Mother is always at fault, isn't she? What about the father? Why is HE never blamed for your sorry life that you chose, and addicted to everything.. step up to the plate, and put the blame where it lies.. YOURSELF.

Well, her parents don't seem to be together and she was apparently raised by her mom...suppose she could blame her dad for not coming and taking her away from her mother, if her mom was some whack job.

...but he'd have to have had the foresight to know how bad his daughter would end up from it all, most people are lucky to even have hindsight. : P

I've never heard of either of these two and know nothing about them. Regardless of what mistakes Mindy has made, "home" is supposed to be the safe zone.
The world has become a very unfriendly place and everyone deserves to have a home base where they are safe, that home base being parents and siblings.

I think what her mother is doing is just plain sick. No parent should place further pain on their child! No matter what my children do or how old they are when they do it, they know I will always be here to love them. Every child deserves forgiveness, love, and patience from their parents, the world does a good enough job abusing them.

Just ridiculous. I side with the mother because her character and lifestyle certainly are 'questionable' , and her only seeing her son once in a year tells it all.

You need to grow up and take responsibility for your own actions. Looks like you want to blame everyone but the right person (YOU). You stars make me sick that think everyone else is the cause of your bad decissions or jail terms. Its always well so and so made me do it or I did not know they would do that to me. Pull up your panties (if you were any) and take charge of your own life and actions BABY.

Too funny, "you stars"...way to lump people together and stereotype.

...you lump homosexuals and ethnic groups too don't you? LOL

All blacks are what?

All gays are what?

...please enlighten me, I am looking for a mentor. : P

Well, fact is...that if she hasn't failed drug tests, has been clean and is doing all that she's being instructed to do.

...then she has a case against her mother and the rag mag.

I can imagine her mother gets a pretty hefty sum for keeping her son, so perhaps her vested interest isn't so honorable.

...because who sells personal, private family information to a rag mag? : P

Besides, grandma obviously didn't raise her kid to me emotionally healthy...why are you giving her so much credit, maybe now she is just screwing up the grandson too. >.<

Mindy, sweetums, instead of suing your mother, you should be down on your hands and knees THANKING her for rescuing this innocent child from the clutches of a drug addict, and giving him at least a CHANCE at a decent life. You can speak all you want, be it through your lawyer or yourself... they are just WORDS. Actions speak louder than words, and YOUR actions (past and present) justify why you don't have custody of your child. You and you alone brought this on yourself. Stop blaming other people and other things for the situation you find yourself in. IT'S YOU!!!

Terrific post, Mel! Typical for someone abusing drugs to blame others but can't figure out how she found an attorney to file a lawsuit against her mother like this

I in no way condone drug abuse, but fact is that drug use is escapism..so what was this chick escaping from, herself, herfamily?

Every now and then a person ends up a waste of flesh on this planet, just because they always really were....but most of the time, it's because while they were a child someone really dropped the ball.

...you give this chick too much credit I think.

I hope you aren't a parent, because if you blow it...you'll likely blame your kid. LOL
