Billy Ray Cyrus Thankful for Controversial GQ Interview

Joel Ryan, AP

Billy Ray Cyrus is already changing his tune about the GQ interview that sparked a great deal of debate. Just last week on Piers Morgan's CNN chat show, the singer said he regretted giving the interview in which he lamented the behavior of his daughter, Miley Cyrus, and the Hollywood lifestyle that kept her in the spotlight for most of her formative teenage years. Now the 49-year-old admits he thinks the highly-publicized article actually saved their lives.

"I don't know what would have happened had I not given that interview," Billy Ray acknowledges to Country Weekly. "I know that the things that I spoke about, that I was extremely worried about, are better now. I felt like something bad was going to happen, and trust me, I'd much rather it happen to me than to Miley. If I had to get up and get spanked [by the media] for speaking about something that concerned me as a father ... I'd rather it happen to me than have to look at the result of something else happening that perhaps could have been far worse."

The 'Achy Breaky Heart' singer, who is reconciled with his wife Tish after a painful separation, says the family unit is stronger than ever. "We're probably better off now than we've been in quite some time," he notes.

The Kentucky native is spending the next few months promoting his new album, 'I'm American,' which is a collection of patriotic tunes that also celebrate the 20th anniversary of his hit, 'Some Gave All.' "[It's a] tribute to veterans and the men and women who are sacrificing so much for our freedom," Billy Ray tells The Boot, "and the sacrifice their entire family is making."

The new CD, which includes guest appearances by Jamey Johnson, Craig Morgan, Darryl Worley and Amy Grant, is already in the Top 25 on the charts.

No matter what he or his daughter has done I give him credit for standing behind two great causes the Armed Forces and COPD. Which both are close to my family and I. My husband is currently supporting the war over seas and this is not his first deployment. Our children and I have been dealing with him being gone/deployed must of their life/our marriage. We know quite well what its like to do without him or things, due to him being enlisted. And it seems like everyone thats not in the service thinks we have it made, NOT. He does not get paid high dollars for the many hours he works. We r still low income and can still qualify for state assistants. And even after putting in 20 yrs he will still have to work to get by or pay for our medical copays and fees. Just becuase you serve ur country doesn't mean you will be taken care of, that is only true for our president, government and their families. So any help we get from famous people is APPRECIATED... so for the ONES that knock the Hicks/Kentuckians or Armed Services you should think who is giving u ur FREEDOM, RIGHTS AND SAFETY...............And to COPD do u know what it is like to see a loved one slowly dying because of COPD or the lack of care/medical coverage? Or struggling to get air / breath or sleep? I do! I watched my grandmother deal with it for many years till she took her last breath. And my father and I are now living with it. So it is not a fun life. So I thank him for all he does to support these causes. And I would be pround and honored to say this to him, even though I may never speak to him or see him in person...Everyone has a learning curve ball thrown at them. It is how we learn, no matter where u r from or who u r...

I admire Bily Ray in trying to keep Miley on the right path, knowing at her age it may be impossible. I like his singing and his beliefs, do hope all works out well for the family. Keep the good work up old Kentucky, I feel like a next door neighbor since I'm from Tennessee.

Miley has turned out beautiful but troubled, but Billy Ray has proven to be absolutely a Career Killer. His daughter deserves better.

It's always good to hear of a family coming back together. I have always been a Billy Ray fan. My only disappointment in him is that a few months ago he had a concert planned for our town, but cancelled out at the last minute. I had the tickets and plans made with my friends to make a whole afternoon/evening of it, but one of our radio djs said it was cancelled because of not enough tickets selling. Seems that's not fair to those of us that DID buy tickets. He should have been there to show he appreciated those of us that ARE his fans, not cancel and risk losing fans.

dude, if the arena holds, say, 5,000 and only 900 people purchase tickets than any number of people are going to pull the plug on this show. Billy Ray was probably the last one to know that the show was cancelled. It is usually impossible to move the venue or complete the show under such time restrictions.

Most arenas need to have fans show up to buy concessions, etc., as the venue is not in the business of losing money to pay all their minimum wage, part time workers. So they have a say in canceling unless someone guarantees a lot of cash--upfront. Sure Billy Ray wanted to do the show but life and the concert business is complex.

BR is a long way from just showing up at a bar and singing a few songs, even if no one is there. Nothing like going to a show and the place is sold 20% capacity.

for all you BRC haters, get over it, and quit reading blogs about him. I personally think he has a unique voice, at least you can understand words when he sings them, he does not get up and shake his a-s and strip down to nothing. I believe we all get off track now and then, hope this family can hold it together. Not a Miley fan but want her to become a respectable young woman. Not follow some of the entertainers out there now, like Rhianna, Gaga, etc. the less they think is best. NOT TRUE
