"Food insecurity is a growing and difficult issue for adults to discuss, much less children," Brad says in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. "We are honored that 'Sesame Street,' with its long history of tackling difficult issues with sensitivity, caring and warmth asked us to be a part of this important project."
With nearly one in four American households affected by poverty, the United States Department of Agriculture estimates that 17 million children have limited access to nutritional and affordable meals. The upcoming prime-time special featuring Brad and Kim will share real-life stories of families who struggle with the uncertainty of daily nourishment.
Chain retail giant Walmart joined in the outreach by sponsoring the show as part of a $1.5 million grant aimed toward the initiative and holding screenings in participating communities. The special will air on PBS nationwide on Oct. 9.
