Cois 'Pee Wee' Moultrie Dead at 89: Hank Williams' Bandmate Buried With Full Military Honors

Funeral services will be held today (Jan. 19) for Cois "Pee Wee" Moultrie, who gained fame as an original member of Hank Williams' Drifting Cowboys band from 1938 to 1940. Moultrie died unexpectedly of a heart attack at Fort Walton Beach (Fla.) Medical Center on Monday (Jan. 15). He was 89.

Born and raised in Albertville, Ala., he joined the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1943 at the outbreak of World War II. He retired from the Air Force in 1971 as a chief master sergeant and in his later years became something of a celebrity, playing his accordion and singing at Southern festivals and attending events honoring the life and times of Hank Williams. Pee Wee contributed several artifacts from their time together to Hank Williams museums in Montgomery, Ala., Georgiana (Hank's Alabama birthplace) and Nashville.

The funeral service, with full military honors, will be conducted today (Jan. 19) at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Fla. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
