"I don't know what to say. I was just trying not to throw up," Kevin joked as he read Taylor's message from his bed at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (quote via CBS' Philadelphia affiliate station's video below). "Taylor, I would love to go with you. Thank you."
"Taylor got back to us!!!!" Victoria wrote on the campaign's Facebook page. "She is unable to attend Kevin's prom, although did one better - Invited Kevin to be her date to the Academy of Country Music Awards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so so so so so much! The McGuire family could never show how grateful we are to all of you! We have won in more than one way ... we got Taylor to take Kevin on a date, and we have made so many good friends along the way."
While Kevin was hoping to spend his 19th birthday -- which happens to be the same day as his June 1 prom -- with the 'Ours' singer, there's no doubt he was elated to see the following status update on Friday afternoon. "Kevin, I'm so sorry but I won't be able to make it to your prom," the country superstar wrote on her Facebook page. "But I was wondering, the ACM Awards are coming up ... Would you be my date? Love, Taylor."
Kevin, a Somerdale, New Jersey high school student, has been diagnosed with Leukemia for the second time. He was first given this prognosis at the age of 13, only to get the all clear in 2010. His sister calls the varsity football player, the "kindest, most noble 18 year old a person could fathom meeting." Despite his years of chemo, spinal taps and bone marrow screenings, the resilient teen never asked, 'Why me?'
Congrats to Kevin and his family. We look forward to seeing him on the ACM red carpet in Las Vegas on April 1!
