Blake Shelton, 'The Voice': Singer Cracks Jokes About Fellow Coaches, Tries Not to Get Fired

Evan Agostini, AP

In the past year, Blake Shelton has become a bona fide TV star. This is thanks to his role as a coach on NBC's hit show, 'The Voice.' However, the singer was initially unsure about whether or not to participate in the reality program.

"I almost didn't do 'The Voice'," he tells Reality TV magazine, remembering the first time he met his future cohorts. "I'm the only country artist, so I'm the only coach on time because I'm worried I'll be fired before we even get started."

Thankfully, the 'Drink On It' singer stuck around, despite the tardiness of his co-stars. "After about 15 minutes, this little guy [Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine] in a white t-shirt and all these tattoos comes in," he recalls.

"Then, Christina [Aguilera]'s boobs come through the door, and about two minutes later the rest of her body comes through," jokes the Oklahoma native. Finally, "in comes this guy in a bright yellow Adidas suit [Cee Lo Green] ... and my manager asks, do I know any of his music?"

In spite of his tentative beginnings on the show, he clearly made the right decision. The debut of the second season of 'The Voice,' which aired right after the Super Bowl, garnered more than 37 million viewers, and it is consistently one of the highest-rated shows each week.

In addition, all four coaches have reportedly signed on for a third season. According to The Wrap, Christina has agreed to return for $10 million, while her male cohorts will also receive "substantial pay raises," amounting to roughly $6 million each. The next installment of 'The Voice' is expected to make a fall debut.

Last season, the 35-year-old came in second with Dia Frampton taking the runner-up slot. This year, though, he's devised a strategy to take the top spot. "I am picking polarizing voices," Blake tells The Boot. "That really worked out well for me last time around ... That's the cool thing about having artists be the coaches -- we all have a different vision for what 'The Voice' is. I think it will become even more dynamic this year, as far as how different each one of our teams are. Now we know what we're looking for and how to go about the game we play."

Blake is balancing his role on the TV show with his job as headliner on his Well Lit & Amplified tour, which includes Justin Moore and Dia Frampton, serving as opening acts. See his concert schedule here.

'The Voice' airs Monday nights at 8:00 PM on NBC.

Wonder why Christina gets $10million per season while the male coaches only get $6 million/each person? Is that discriminative or sexist, or what???????

I just wish they had a show for some of us older singers that didn't have the chance of trying to win a shot at recording and make it for writer singers only!!! You would have to sing and have written your own song not neccisarily the music but the words and or music!!! Would love to have that chance that I missed 20 years ago!!! Nothing wrong with wanting a dream and missed it!!! I still dream which is a good thing!

I too love Blake and think him and Adam Levine plus Ce Lo make that show. Christina has her nose to high in the air for me to even care if shes on the show or not. She thinks she makes the show but she could easily be replaced with someone that doesn't think they are the greatest. and make the same amount of money the guys do. The Voice is the best show on tv today.

I love the VOICE!! I have the hots for Adam Levine (which girl dosen't?) that voice!!l those looks; those "moves like Jagger"!! I Love Ce Lo Green and even though Christina Aguilera can be an obnoxious pain in the butt, she has the most Amazing Voice!!.. Blake Shelton completes the show. He is so "down home" and sweet and talented you just wanna take him home and cook him fried chicken :)... I am sooo glad they are doing a third season!!!!!
