The classic country-pop song was among those on the list of essential American tunes Johnny Cash gave his daughter when she was 18. In 2010, the song was recorded by Rosanne for her album, 'The List,' and featured harmony vocals from Bruce Springsteen. The album was one of the singer-songwriter's most critically and commercially successful projects, and also earned a Grammy nomination.
Written by Hal David and Paul Hampton, 'Sea of Heartbreak' was a huge crossover hit for future Country Music Hall of Fame member Don Gibson in 1961, reaching No. 2 on the country chart and 21 on the pop chart. Other acts who've recorded the song include Jimmy Buffett and George Strait, the Everly Brothers, Merle Haggard, Anne Murray, the Searchers, Leo Sayer and Poco. It was also included on Johnny Cash's 1996 album, 'Unchained,' with harmony vocals by Tom Petty and instrumentation by Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham.
Recorded for Rosanne's 'Live From Zone C' special, all of the songs presented this week were the top vote-getters chosen via Rosanne's Twitter account. They are all featured on the two-disc 'Essential Rosanne Cash' released in 2011. Special thanks to Rosanne and John Leventhal for sharing them with us!
