"She dropped everything she was holding, which I believe was a cheap can of beer and her car keys," Tom recalls to Country Weekly.
The singer-songwriter popped the question at Jaime's home in Atlanta, before they attended a Radiohead concert, with a friend filming the big event. "The great thing is we have it on video so we have it for the rest of our lives. If we ever have children, we can show them this video of how we got engaged."
The happy couple's decade-long courtship just proves to Tom that they were destined to be together. "When I met her, I knew it was something bigger than a normal meeting," he says. "We went on to be best friends and really grew up together through our 20s. Just like every relationship, we've had our ups and downs and we even split a time or two to work things out and ended up coming back together. I've always heard if you let something go and it comes back, it's because it was meant to be. That happened twice with us."
Tom popped the question with a unique sparkler, and a little help from his father. "My dad lives with me here in Nashville, and we were driving around one day and talking about [proposing to Jaime]," he explains. "I told him how stressed I was about finding a ring. I wanted to find something special, one-of-a-kind and vintage. As we were saying this, and driving down 21st Street, we saw a sign in front of this little shop that said 'vintage engagement rings,' right as we are talking about it."
The men quickly pulled into the store and found the ideal ring. "It was the first one that I looked at that I liked and that was the one that I got. It took a day. I had stressed out about it for a long time, thinking it was going to be a tough process, but it fell right into place. It all just felt right."
Next up for the lovebirds is deciding who'll be invited to the wedding. "I happen to have a humongous family and she has a small family, so I'm already feeling guilty about my guest list," he shares.
Still, whether they opt for a big ceremony or a smaller event, Tom says he's happy to have found his soul mate. "She's really my best friend and I think the decision for me to get married was because I've had her in my life and I've had her not in my life and I just don't ever want to have her not in my life ever again."
Tom may be off the market, but he's still got a date to appear on ABC's 'The Bachelorette.' The reality show, which tapes tonight (March 23), will feature leading lady, Emily Maynard, taking her date to a Gloriana show at the N.C. Music Factory. Tom will be joined on stage by his bandmates, Mike Gossin and Rachel Reinert, for the concert.
Gloriana's upcoming concert schedule includes stops in Kansas and Massachusetts, as well as a performance at the ACM Experience in Las Vegas. See their tour dates here.
