Chris Ethridge Dead: Flying Burrito Brothers Founder Succumbs to Cancer at 65

Gijsbert Hanekroot, Redferns

MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) - John Christopher "Chris" Ethridge II, a Mississippi-born musician and songwriter who was a founding member of the country-rock band "The Flying Burrito Brothers," has died in Meridian. He was 65.

Officials with Robert Barham Family Funeral Home said Tuesday that Ethridge died Monday at Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian. The family said in a statement that Ethridge had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in September.

Ethridge toured with Willie Nelson in the late 70s. With Joel Scott Hill and Johny Barbata, Ethridge recorded in the L.A. Getaway, which many rock critics hail as one of the great, lost 1970s rock albums.

Services are Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home Chapel in Meridian.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Sue; a daughter and two sons.

Shame you have to show a video of the Burrito Brothers in their later years. Chris, Sneaky Pete, Micheal Clark and Gram Parson were already gone by the time this video was made. Chris Hillman (as great as he is) could not keep the old sound alive.

i'm used to defending hip-hop and my people on this site, but i'm surprised to see some of the cruel ignorance being displayed to country music, especially a classic band like this. shame

Country was only a fad during the late 80's and early 90's. At 65 he must have only appealed to the Hee-Haw crowd of inbreds.

Obviously, you're quite ignorant of American history to state such banal drivel. Country music has been around for a good long time, becoming more popular mainstream America with the invention of the radio and later, television. From the 20's on up through today Country music has not only survived but prospered and adapted (whether fans like it or not) to the changing tastes of modern day mainstream listeners. Perhaps when you can pull your microcephalic head out of your rigidly clasped rectum you will learn to research a subject before you type and reveal to all the absolutely dismal and pitifully underwhelming scale and scope of what one can only assume you would classify as "wit." Certainly by most standards you're not full of wit.. doubtful of your even making it to half. Dare I say perhaps you have no wit at all?

The Flying Burrito Brothers most famous player was Gram Parsons, who not only played with the Byrds and Rolling Stones, but also spent much of the 1970s tripping in Joshua Tree on magic mushrooms while looking for UFOS and then OD'ed on morphine and booze. His body was then kidnapped by his drunken friends from the airport, driven back to Joshua Tree, doused in gasoline, and set ablaze in a humongous fireball.

Now, does that sound like country music for the hee-haw crowd?
