"A lot of people really wanted to know about it, how it went down. Everyone wanted an interview," the country star tells ABC News Radio. "That's all great, but I wanted to be normal for a minute. I always thought I was normal until that moment."
The 30-year-old's engagement may be celebrated by millions of fans, but he says their ceremony will have a very small guest list. "No shoes, and I'll probably just be laid back in casual clothes, and she'll be in her pretty dress. We'll have just immediate family and call it a day," he maintains.
While Jake has enjoyed several recent successes, including his latest single, "Alone With You" soaring to the top of the charts, he says a lavish wedding isn't appealing. "My life has always been about keeping things simple, and I don't see either one of us spending a long time planning a wedding," he tells Country Weekly. "I have a lot going on this summer touring with Kenny [Chesney] and Tim [McGraw] and a lot going into the fall. We love this time of the year. We are both from Florida, so we are thinking it will be a cool, laid-back sunrise service on the beach. We might have a guy playing a little nylon-string guitar or something. I bet our wedding doesn't last for more than 10 or 15 minutes. We love the idea of starting the day fresh ... a dawn-of-a-new-day sort of deal."
One thing is certain, when Lacey's father walks her down the aisle, Jake knows he will have his blessing in marrying his daughter. "The first time I met him, he said, 'Look, if you have any plans whatsoever of breaking my daughter's heart, you might as well let her go right now,'" the singer recalls. "He told me that if she ever came crying to him that I had broken her heart, he would hunt me down."
Thankfully, no hunting was necessary. While the wedding date remains uncertain, we do know Jake will kick off his role as the opening act for Kenny and Tim's Brothers of the Sun tour on June 2 in Tampa, Fla. See the complete tour schedule here.
