Eric Church: Miranda Lambert Is Accomplished, Rolling Stone Interview Misunderstood

Mark Sullivan, Getty Images

Eric Church doesn't hate the players; he just hates the game. The acclaimed singer-songwriter has found himself having to clarify controversial statements made to Rolling Stone -- statements that landed him in hot water with his friend and fellow tourmate Miranda Lambert, and with her husband, Blake Shelton.

"It's become 'American Idol' gone mad," he told the magazine of today's reality competition show craze. "Honestly, if Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green f---ing turn around in a red chair, you get a deal? That's crazy. I don't know what would make an artist do that. You're not an artist."

Naturally, Blake and his wife, who was a 2003 finalist on the TV show "Nashville Star," were offended. But Eric sent a statement to The Boot tonight, via his publicist, saying he did not mean to slam his fellow country stars.

"The comment I made to Rolling Stone was part of a larger commentary on these types of reality television shows and the perception they create, not the artists involved with the shows themselves," Eric clarifies. "The shows make it appear that artists can shortcut their way to success. There are a lot of artists due to their own perseverance that have gone on to be successful after appearing on these shows, but the real obstacles come after the cameras stop rolling. Every artist has to follow up television appearances with dedication towards their craft, but these shows tend to gloss over that part and make it seem like you can be ordained into stardom. I have a problem with those perceived shortcuts, not just in the music industry. Many people have come to think they can just wake up and have things handed to them.

"I have a lot of respect for what artists like Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, and my friend Miranda Lambert have gone on to accomplish," continues the "Springsteen" singer. "This piece was never intended to tear down any individual, and I apologize to anybody I offended in trying to shed light on this issue. I am grateful for all of the artists and fans that have supported me along my journey and certainly did not mean for my comments to undermine their talent and achievements."

Eric did not mention Blake in his statement, nor did he retract his stance that reality show judges are tarnishing their legacy. "Once your career becomes something other than the music, then that's what it is. I'll never make that mistake. I don't care if I f---ing starve," he told Rolling Stone.

Miranda was quick to call Eric out on the interview via Twitter Monday, writing, "Thanks Eric Church for saying I'm not a real artist. Or @kelly_clarkson, @carrieunderwood & @KeithUrban. Your welcome for the tour in 2010." (Eric opened for Miranda on her Revolution tour.) Blake also tweeted about the controversial interview, writing simply, "I wish I misunderstood this."

The contestants on these shows that make it through to the end of the shows do put in a lot of hard work, just because you only see them for an hour a week doesn't mean they aren't working and practicing the rest of the time. As for those of you siding with Eric saying he's not afraid to tell it like it is and he doesn't care who he pisses off, evidently he DOES care who he pisses off because it only took him a day to start retracting his statements; I believe that would be what we call "all bark and no bite", someone who says a lot but doesn't live up to it. I like some of Eric Church's music, but he's just another idiot like Kanye or any other widely known person running their mouth without thinking, only to apologize and "clarify" 24 hours later. He's sick of fast-track musical stardom, and I'm sick of brainless, spineless loud mouths.

To little to late Eric. Lost all respect for you and I E-Mailed my radio station to tell them if they play your songs my friends and I will turn off the radio and just may not turn it back on. Sugar coat it all you want, your a mean jealous little man.

Miranda and Blake really like to make drama out of nothing and "tweet" it. They started the whole "Ashton is making fun of country" B.S. too.

He's usually drunk, so he probably doesn't remember what he says. It's irresponsible for someone with a young child to be drinking all the time.

His statements don't surprise me at all. He's expressed it before - listen to his song Lotta Boot Left to Fill. And it's also not surprising that others have taken what they wanted from those comments. It's the risk of having a public persona-you can't please everyone all the time when you're being true to who you are. Some could say that Miranda's twitter comment suggests that as thanks to her for putting him on "her" tour she expected him to keep those beliefs to himself; that he's still owing her for being 'allowed' on her tour. What kind of use of her power in the industry is that? My point being, there's a twist to everything. On the flip side of Eric's belief...listen to Tim's song Things Change. What we would be missing out on if we didn't have this new generation of music infused from reality TV? Is damning a particle way of HOW they got into music worth missing out on the content they have to offer? I don't have the answer, but he shouldn't be punished for speaking his mind. What? You're not supposed to say something because it might be misconstrued? Well, "This is country music. And we do."

Miranda Lambert loves the drama and she brings it all out in public. She needs to step back. Reading the interview, it was obvious what Eric meant. I've lost so much respect for Miranda lately.

Really? Miranda does NOT love the drama but she is one of the few women who speaks her mind. Sorry if you disagree w/ a strong woman expressing her opinion. Eric Church couldn't start apologizing quick enough. After reading the interview it is clear to many that Eric was trying so hard too be "cool" now that he has seen a little success.

Eric has his opinions just like you and I. Who cares if he doesn't like reality shows.. A lot of people don't. GET OVER IT.

Get Over it my Ass! As my Dad used to say "Don't bite the hand that feeds you"! Miranda took EC on tour with her and Blake has brought a tremendous amount of exposure to country music - both of which benefitted Mr. Church!
